This is very unsettling, Elizabeth... is this what Red Sox fans fantasize about? Tieing up Yankees and spanking them? [No No]

Of course, the sad truth is that in reality Red Sox fans urge the Yankees to spank them. ("We're a BAD team! We only got in because of the Wild Card! Yes, yes, beat us, yes!") Sad to see how so many years of frustration have warped the psyche of Red Sox fans...

I would just like to point out that while no team has won after being down 3-0, last year's world champions won three games in a row in each series. They also won 4 games in a row spanning each series twice. In baseball where streaks make up a season I think it is certainly possible. Less likely considering Boston is down 2-0 as I type.

And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,

Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

You know, you all should be proud. In June/July, the Red Sox were easily the biggest disappointment in the major leagues. It looked for a while like they might not even beat Tampa. They came roaring back, and made a race out of it. Going into the three game series in New York, a lot of people thought Boston would win the division. Going into this playoff series, Boston was favored to win. After being on the brink of being swept, the Red Sox showed that they wouldn't quit, even when their fans at Fenway were more than ready to. You got Pedro playing again and Schilling ready to try again tommorrow despite his injury. You have a lot to be proud of.

Here's what it's like to be a Red Sox fan:

1)Watch parts of first 3 games; the Sox lose them all.
2)Don't watch Game 4, based on a gut feeling that watching would be bad. Check the score only once; the Sox win.
3) As a result, here I am, avoiding scores for as long as possible (10-15 minutes at a time), and only checking mlb.com. I am not watching the Sox on TV though.

Was that guy from Boston in '99 a jackass because he tried to run out of the base path? Should a defensive back not hold a receiver if the alternative is to let him score a touchdown? A-Rod is just playing the game.

Nah, it's always been Cubs and Red Sox after whichever particular two teams I picked for a particular season. And I've never picked the Yankees. What's the point of rooting for a team so rich its gonna make the playoffs anyway by buying out its competition, ie the players who made up the competition?

Just believe that if a ball can be stripped that easily (even if one assumed intent), then it wasn't under the control of the player holding it, couldn't have been used to successfully make a tag out.

You DO realize how floppy a baseball glove is, right? Holding on is one thing. But a slap directly to the glove is going to strip the ball from it unless you have it gripped completely by the fingers--and that'd require barehanding it.

An AP sports writer agrees:

quote:
The umpires decided to change the call, ruling that Rodriguez was out on interference and Jeter had to go back to first base. Replays clearly showed that Rodriguez intentionally stuck out his hand. Rodriguez, who reached second base on the play which was originally ruled an error on Arroyo, stood at second with both hands up in apparent disbelief.

The Sox have had some bad calls in their day, This was a good call, and I thought the Yankees, other than A-Rod, handled it well. I also wish I could say that the Sox fans in Fenway would have had more class, but I know there would have been things thrown there as well.

If that wasn't the rule, then players could stop their opponants from throwing the ball by basically mugging them on the field.

By using a bear hug. [Big Grin]

There is a difference, clearly stated in the rules, between hitting a baseman who is in the base path between bases and hitting the glove or hand of someone who isn't impeding your forwad progress....who isn't even on the base path at all.

I loved how the Umps got both calls so right this time. I am use to seeing terrible calls made in the playoffs, but this is a welcome sight this year.

Now....lets hope that tonights game is every bit as exciting.

Ick, he was a jackass for arguing the call, and feigning disbelief when it happened.

That's the way the game is played. Even when a manager knows a call is right, he has to argue it. This is the same thing. When you argue one call a little bit, you are more likely to get the next close call. A-Rod argued much less vociferously then Ortiz did after each of two different outs in Game 5. He put his hands up and said "What?!" a few times . . . he didn't get all nuts or out of control. He certainly didn't pull anything like a John McEnroe. This makes him a jackass? I think he handled it just fine.

BIG difference though, Icky....Ortiz thought he was right, while A-Rod KNEW he had deliberatly hit the glove to knock the ball out.

You DID see the footage, right?
There is no question that it was deliberate.

Haveing an honest disagreemnet is one thing, but A-Rod...well, pouting doesn't work most of the time.

I want to say that last night, for the first time, I was really really pushing for a Sox win.

Not that I'm a Boston fan.

See, my boss paid large bucks to get playoff tickets. He leaves work to watch every game.

That is here in St. Louis.

If Boston would have lost, then the next Astros/Cardinals game would have been tonight. Since the Sox won, the Cardinal/Astro game is this afternoon.

My boss is leaving in half an hour.

Go Boston!!!.

(On the flip side, if Boston wins tonight, and the Cardinals win the next two--then defeat Boston in the series, Mack will never talk to me again. I don't know who to root for.)

What an awesome, awesome game. And the umps getting all those calls right, when in the past it would've been 'my way or the highway' is a big improvement. I doubted Shilling had that in him. Wow.

It kind of bugged me that in a postgame interview Schilling kept saying that God did it for him. I don't mind when people thank God in acceptance speeches or whatever, but saying that God's hand was upon him is a little much for me.

It also bugged me when they showed a fan waving a sign saying "God is a Yankee fan."

Being religious and thanking God still seems a little different from being religious and saying that your pitching was God's work. I think that would probably bug me even if I were religious. ::shrug:: Maybe not. Who knows?

The "God is a Yankee fan" thing would certainly have bugged me even if I were religious, given that I'm a Giants fan.

I think that's a pretty sweeping generalization. If you changed it to "superstitous" I could maybe agree. But "athlete" includes all sports anywhere...

I think he was saying that God's hand was upon him allowing him to pitch despite all his injures, not that God caused him to win.

I heard an interview with him last night and he was very humble. He said that rather than trying to do what he wanted, his way, he surrendered to the inevitability of the night and prayed....not for strikes or for a win, but simply for the strength to go out there and pitch.

That didn't sound arrogant to me at all.

A lot of athletes are religious, but not all of them by any stretch. We just hear about their beliefs more because they are vocal in their gratitude for the opportunities, and they are in the public spotlight.

If I made 20 million over 5 years playing a game I loved, I would think I had been blessed as well.

As I said, I'm not really relying on this assertion from what they say about themselves immediately following a game.

And I really hate teh argument that you can tell whether a person is religious or not by things they do that aren't "religious" acts. By that standard, there are three people in the world who are religious...

The athletic communities I've been involved in, have all involved people who, for the most party, honestly believe that without god's direct assistance, they couldnt possibly do what they do for a living. It would be damn tough to find a track athlete in america, at the professional level, who does not see himself or herself as completely in gods hands, and football is similar, although there are more people in football who are not religious. baseball is similar, although I do not have the same knowledge of the baseball community I do of football and track. These are not platitudes athletes say to reporters... it is how they approach their work, day in, and day out.

I thought about this as I was typing, but I was thinking more about the amount of domestic violence issues and such.

My sport is admittedly swimming, there are very very few people who can actually make a living at it. I'd say that the average swimmer's amount of religion is probably an accurate reflection of the country as a whole.

I'd suspect that a professional player in the majors is like a soldier during wartime or a police officer patrolling a bad section of town: nearly always aware that a career-ending or life-threatening injury can occur at any moment; even moments which feel safe.
I'd also guess that a high-level professional team athelete is reminded during practice and in games of how closely they are skirting the edge of disaster more often than any peacetime soldier or any police officer on a upscale beat.

Then ya gotta consider that many such athletes have already had an injury which would permanently disable an average fan, have already seen other amateurs and pros knocked out of a slot in the majors, and have recovered enough to resume their careers.
Wanna bet that there weren't some promises made in prayers for recovery?

Since police officers and soldiers are more religious than average, I would expect that a greater percentage of athletes would also gain comfort from believing that a Higher Power is and will be watching over them, even should a horrifying injury occur.

Congratulations. You guys pulled off an amazing comeback, and/or we choked in a big way. I really thought that you guys were using up all your resources to stay alive, and that you wouldn't have the pitching for game seven. Instead, our best bats went quiet late in game four and never came back again. David Ortiz killed us over and over again, until Johnny Damon did it today.

[Cry]

Of course, I'll be rooting for the National League team, and hoping that we took enough out of you that you won't have what it takes to win.

You've been to the World Series before in the last 86 years, and we've lost in the playoffs before, too. So, I'm not happy, but it's nothing new, and it's not the end of the world.

4 games not watched, 4 wins... Coincidence?
---

Anyway, I agree with Icarus. I honestly was rooting for the Twins to win the LDS series. Why? Because I want that darned Championship parade. I want to be in a throng of millions down at Government Center the next day. Playing the Twins would have likely been easier to get to that goal than going through the Yankees (and I think my opinion borne out by the facts of the ALCS). Is it great that we defeated the Yankees? Heck ya. Does it make this post-season sweeter? You bet.

BUT THE YANKEES-RED SOX SERIES WAS NOT THE WORLD SERIES.

The Yankees sucked through most of the 80s, when we went to the ALCS 3-4 times, and the World Series once. They've been bad before, and they've lost to us many times (though maybe not when it counted, like last night, I'll admit). I say, enjoy this victory, but get REALLY pumped up for the World Series.

I'll go so far to say that if you get more enjoyment out of the ALCS victory than the World Series, that beating the Yankees is better than winning the World Championship, you personify some of the most obnoxious stereotypes that other fans (ESPECIALLY Yankees fans) attribute to us Red Sox fans.

I'll put it to you this way. Not a single grandparent of mine saw the Red Sox win the World Series. The older two were both born in 1919. A great-grandmother (who died last year), diehard Red Sox fan, was 4 or 5 when they last won the whole thing. My parents have gone more than a half century of life, and no series victory.

So screw the Yankees; bring on the NL. Then let the parades begin!

Go Sox! I believe!

EDIT: Now, I don't believe in "The Curse", but to be honest about it, The Curse doesn't get broken until we win the World Series.

Those poor Yankee fans driving off to work in the city saw: "THE CURSE IS HISTORY. THANKS"(this in black) "RED SOX"(this in red)strung across the overpass. Ha ha. Sorry, mean but funny.

True Cardinal emotions can best be summed up in the following joke circulating the iternet:

Four Major League Baseball fans went rock climbing:

A Yankee fan, a Red Sox fan, a Cubs fan, and a Cardinal fan. They had
been arguing all the way up the mountain about who amongst them loved their
team more and was the most "diehard" fan.

The argument grew hotter and hotter and the four fans grew more and more agitated. Such was the emotion that upon reaching the top of the mountain, the Yankee fan proclaimed loudly and earnestly to the other three, "This is for the New York Yankees!" and without a moments hesitation threw himself off the mountain. The supreme sacrifice!

Not to be outdone by a Yankee fan, the Red Sox fan jumped up and cried out, "This is for the Boston Red Sox!" and quickly threw himself off
the mountain, also willing to sacrifice himself to prove his devotion to his team.

Refusing to be outdone by the Yankee and Red Sox fans, the Cardinal fan rose to his feet, summoned up every ounce of his courage, and yelled at the top of his lungs, "This is for the St. Louis Cardinals!" and without a moment's hesitation, shoved the Cubs fan off the mountain.

Hey y'all --

Sorry, I've been traveling for a few days and missed game 7...

Anyway, congrats to the Red Sox, that was a GREAT series. [Smile] (And if y'all do lose the World Series, ehh, you still will have won a great victory over the Yankees in the ALCS. Personally, I had a lot more fun watching last year's exciting Yankees-Red Sox ALCS, and even though the Yankees made it to the World Series, I didn't care that much and didn't watch it, since I figured there was no way it could be as good as the ALCS series that had just happened.)
