Earlier today a thread was started in which a fairly new poster recommended that we give Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy a look. I responded by saying that the Hitchhiker's guide was one of those books that you could just generally assume that everyone on the forum was familiar with. There would inevitably be exceptions, of course, but they would be few and far between.

What other books, movies, etc. can you pretty much count on everyone here having experienced? Here's what I came up with in that post:

1. Hitchhiker's Guide
2. Princess Bride (the movie)
3. So I Married an Axe Murderer
4. At least one book by OSC, usually but not always being Ender's Game

I know that there are other things that fit this criteria, but I'm having trouble coming up with them.

Hmmm...

5. Calvin and Hobbes
6 Strongbad (maybe--what do you think?)

What else?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I thought of that same thing when someone posted a link to the badgerbadgerbadger page. That and Strong Bad are pretty much givens, you think?

Um, Strong Bad? Huh? [Angst]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

If liking StrongBad is required, we have a problem.

I have finally made it from loathing to mild dislike.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Ack! Never Strong Bad? Get thee to homestarrunner.com post haste.

These are all short cartoons written in response to people's emails. The list goes chronologically, the newest first.

You don't have to watch them in any specific order, though I always reccommend that your first one be "Dragon," followed by "English Paper" and "Japanese Cartoon."

Warning: this will be your new addiction.

I'd add "The Dark Tower Series", "Lord of the Rings","Song of Ice and Fire", The Bible and Neil Gaiman's stuff.
I've recommended the "Outlander" series to many, but it doesn't come-up very often.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

Monty Python, Holy Grail in particular but actually the entire canon.

Lord of the Rings (the books)

Possibly Dune?

One of the things about hatrack that I love is that you can toss out references to just about anything, and somebody will get it. [Smile]

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I will never be in the RR Martin group per my own choice.

And I also hadn't seen the badgerbadgerbadger thing until it was posted here yesterday. [Smile]

But all that other stuff? Totally a given. [Wink]

(ak, that's true. That's one thing that's great about having interests and careers that differ from everyone else's...like beekeeping for instance! [Big Grin] You usually have someone here that understands, and if not, there's usually someone that's willing to give it a read, a listen, or a try so they can discuss it with you!)

1, 2, 4, and 5 for me...

I only saw So I Married an Axe Murderer once, and, well, *whispers* didn't enjoy it enough to see it again. Also, since we're revealing deep, dark secrets...while I recognize Strongbad, my feelings sort of run with rivka's on that one.

That said, I heard of Strongbad because of hatrack, and I read the Song of Fire and Ice because of hatrack. I have not, however, read much, if any of Neil Gaiman. I do think you can probably include Monty Python and the Holy Grail fairly safely

I might add Harry Potter to the list, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

This is all bearing in mind, of course, that there are so many different kinds of people here that there is absolutely no guarantee that everyone will get everything. I'm not sure there is a general hatrack consciousness.

Posted by General Hatrack Consciousness (Member # 7141) on :

Sure there is. I'm right here.

Posted by babager (Member # 6700) on :

Confession time-- I have never read Hitchhiker's Guide. [Eek!] I intend to rectify this soon. It is just too embarrassing when talking to another sci-fi enthusiast and they ask me what I thought of Hitchhiker's and I have to admit that I havn't read it.

I had never heard of Strong Bad either, but I'm good with most of the rest of the list. Harry Potter, LOTR, Dune, and of course almost all OSC's stuff!!!

Oh and I LOVED So I married and Ax Murderer.

Sorry Noemon, but only the first you mentioned rings a bell.

However I DO know all the ones from Lady Dove and Tatiana
(yes! The Outlander series are great. And I have the funniest book in the world, it is called 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare and Monthy Python')

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Ginette, you've never read anything by OSC?

Dagonee's right--you don't have to like something for it to be part of your general consciousness. I'm only mildly fond of StrongBad myself, but I generally catch and understand the references to it.

I wasn't familiar with badgerbadgerbadger until it was posted here recently. That's been a thing here? I don't remember seeing much about it.

To be part of your "consciousness", do you have to have actually experienced the thing in question (read the book, seen the movie, whatever)? Or do you simply have to know it exists?

Because I know that, for example, LoTR and Harry Potter exist, but I've neither read their books nor seen their movies. Then again, I'd say just about everyone knows they exist. They're not exactly some esoteric geek thing anymore.

Hitchhiker's Guide - Check.

So I Married an Axe Murderer - Never even heard of it.
OSC books - Check.
Calvin and Hobbes - Check.
StrongBad - Check.
Dark Tower series - Nope.
LOTR - Of course!
Song of Ice and Fire - I started it, but didn't get very far.
The Bible - I'm pretty familiar with the Old Testament. New Testament, not so much.
Neil Gaiman - I've read Good Omens...
Monty Python - Seen it, but am not a fan.
badgerbadgerbadger - Check.
Harry Potter - Check.

Things I've heard of but never experienced:
-Harry Potter
-Dune

Things I've experienced a small amount of:
-Lord of the Rings (read the first hundred pages of the first book; never seen any of the movies)
-The Bible

Things I have no idea what the heck you're talking about:
-"The Dark Tower Series"
-"Song of Ice and Fire" or "Song of Fire and Ice" or whatever the heck it is
-Neil Gaiman
-"Outlander"
-"Eye of Argon"

Hm. Guess I'm not a true Hatracker after all. . . .

I have read HHGTTG, and I thought it was horrible. Not bad, but one of the worst things I have ever read, and a total complete waste of my time.

I had to try to read it 4 times before I got through it, and I only did it because my friends LOVED it.....and I read so fast that the whole damn thing took less thatn 2 hours to read. Probably less than 1 1/2 hours.

It was so bad that it couldn't hold my attention for that long.

Well sm it wasn't me so there's at least three people here who've read that book/series.

I was watching an episode of Stargate Sg-1 yesterday, which I occaisionally dive into not and again when Star Trek isn't on, and there was this fabulous line which I'm going to put here because although you've all probably seen it many times before I think I'll explode if I don't:

"Hammond is insisting SG-1 needs a socio-political nerd to off-set our overwhelming coolness."

Best. Line. Ever.

Yes, O'Neill has the most amazing one-liners ever. I could probably fill up a thread with my favorite quotes.

I suspect that most of the very popular SF is in the Hatrack consiousness--Star Wars, Trek, and Gate; Terminator; Babylon 5; Farscape; Hitchhiker's Guide; most people have read at least some of Asimov, Clarke, or Heinlein.

I will not watch Stargate. It's like Star Trek without the ship. What's the point!? [Dont Know]

I adore Star Trek, Star Wars, and I liked Andromeda alright until it "Jumped the Shark" as my friend likes to say.

For more Hatrack givens, how about a knowledge of bi-monthly laptop threads? They always boil down to either "Buy an IBM notebook" or "Buy a nice Apple iBook", with few options in between.

I've gotten through chunks of the Dune-universe books, I haven't read much Lord of the Rings stuff, nor have I read HHGTTG. LotR is just inexcusable, but I'd rather read O'Reilly's "Learning Perl" first. I read part of HHGTTG, and wasn't impressed.

I married an axe murderer?

What about at least one Cohen Brothers movie? O'Brother, or Fargo?

Yeah, but that doesen't help, since I'm a heterosexual male and the show is sadly lacking in females that I happen to be attracted to. Therefore, I can only go on good plotlines and cool scifi stuff, both of which I feel are somewhat lacking, especially compared to Star Trek.

Does nobody read Penny Arcade? More people should read slashdot.

This is really going to scandalize a few people:

1. Hitchhiker's Guide
Nope never read it, however I am aware of the most frequently mentioned lines.
2. Princess Bride (the movie)
Yes
3. So I Married an Axe Murderer
Not even a clue. It's a movie?

4. At least one book by OSC, usually but not always being Ender's Game.
Yep

5. Calvin and Hobbes
Aware of it, read some of it. Enjoy occasionally but not a rabid fanatic.
6. Strongbad
Seen one episode. Like Hitchikers Guide, aware of references to Strongbad but not familiar with the subject directly.

No, Strong Bad is. However, "So I Married an Axe Murderer" is not.

In fact, the only movies that I consider part of Hatrack Consciousness are LotR, The Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix, Labyrinth, The Holy Grail, and Star Wars; I assume all Hatrackers have seen these films, but would preface any discussion of any other films with "for those of you who've seen this...."

I thought I'd better start making a list while I read this thread of things I general lack a clue about. Hoping someone has already added Groundhog Day. You don't have to be religious about it like I am, but you can't be my mother in law who totally didn't get it.

quote:
"The Dark Tower Series", "Lord of the Rings","Song of Ice and Fire", The Bible and Neil Gaiman's stuff.
I've recommended the "Outlander"

Okay, I am into the Bible, and 2/3 LOTR. TNNITO. [Wink] [Wink]

Harry Potter... must...resist...reeducation. But if I ever do read it, it will be Porter's fault. I can sympathize with those who don't get StrongBad because I don't get Harry Potter.

Dingles? [Dont Know] I'm with Book on that one, thanks to a guy in my Latin class who enhanced a picture I had drawn of a Centaur.

P.S. Oh crud, clicked the wrong button.

quote:
Strange Brew, Office Space, Napoleon Dynamite, They Might Be Giants
I think these are good. Though I haven't seen Napoleon yet, I will within the week. I'm sure office space is cool, but unfortunately I read that Entertainment week about movies that should have cult followings but don't.

Any and all Coen brothers movies.

[Hail] Bokies.

(((Kwea))) [Cry] Another confession- I always fall asleep during the knights who say Ni. Could be due to the fact that people never put the stupid movie in until 1 a.m. and I contend it just isn't funny prior to that hour. But I enjoy quoting the lines with the boys.

Being a Semitic Linguist, I am honorbound to oppose Stargate and all its bastard children.

I'm also anti- Babylon 5

quote:
Joss Whedon, Studio Ghibli
Okay, I contend that this is pure flaunting of obscurity. Maybe from before my time, which technically began mar 2003.

quote:
LotR, The Princess Bride, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Matrix, Labyrinth, The Holy Grail, and Star Wars; I assume all Hatrackers have seen these films, but would preface any discussion of any other films with "for those of you who've seen this...."

While this list has some serious omissions, I will endorse it because he left out Harry Potter. [Evil]

quote:
Unfortunately, I have to admit to not YET having seen Princess Bride..

FG

[Eek!] I have a new mission in life.
quote:
I'm very young and don't know all these titles, but I think everyone has heard of Seinfeld
Yeah, I think the idea is something that is uniquely definitive of Hatrack. There are too many Hatrackers who view all network TV with scorn for a top rated TV show to be part of the HGC. Though many will confess that they secretly revel in some reality TV show or another. Also, whining about how good some show that noone watches is HGC.

My reply to you is the same as my reply to Book.

Myer's Briggs personality tests.

I guess one aspect of Seinfeld that you will find at Hatrack is quotes by George's father. Or clever seemingly witty interpolations of more popular lines. "No Grammar for you!"

I guess the thing about Hatrack is not that you fit in, but that no one here totally fits in.

Joss Whedon is not obscure. [Smile] Studio Ghibli may be, if you're not a fanboy/girl, or if you avoid threads started by xnera. [Smile]

I've known Joss Wheadon's name for a long time, although I've only in the last 6 months become familiar with his work. Studio Ghibli I've never heard of.

And Strange Brew? I'm familiar with it--thought it was hilarious when I was a kid--but it's pretty uncommon to see references to it here, unless I've just been oblivious to them.

As for Dingle, my lackluster hatrack search abilities aren't turning up the original thread. Could anybody provide a link to it?

Studio Ghibli is the animation studio that produces, among other things, the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Perhaps you've heard his name before. He is the brilliant animator behind My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. He's done other films, of course, but those are the ones that people who aren't anime enthusiasts are most likely to be familiar with.

I don't have the slightest idea who Joss Whedon is.

Joss Whedon = main force behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly.

Thanks Dana!

Verily, sure, I'm familiar with Miyazaki. Hadn't heard (or, much more likely, remembered hearing) the name of his studio.

I can't recommend Firefly highly enough, by the way. It's amazingly well done Character driven SF. It went off the air after less than a season, but you can rent or buy the DVD set of the 14 or so episodes that were filmed.

Now I know Studio Ghibli, too. Prior to this, I only was familiar with the movies.

"Dingle" has cropped up several times here. As have references to "The Joys of a Freshly Shaved Scrotum."

Dingle? You mean Officer Dingle of the Reno Police Department?

Same referent, different context. [Wink]

I had forgotten about the Eye of Argon until now... and I'm so glad someone linked it.
