Does Britain recognize America as becoming Independant in 1776, or 1783?
That is to say, were you to go to GB, would they say America is 230 years old, or 223?

I would say Great Britain recognized American independance in 1783, by signing the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War. Article I of the treaty states that "His Britannic Majesty acknowledges the said United States, viz.,[the 13 colony states], to be free sovereign and independent states"...etc
How could they recognize American independance before that? That was the whole reason for the war.

At least 2 options answer that question.
1) A finite universe can close in on itself through curvature of space and time, leaving nothing outside. A 3-D example is a sphere, which curves around and meets itself.
2) Or a finite universe could be surrounded by other different universes, all part of a Meta-Universe. Despite sci-fi plots, it's unlikely humans would ever be able to gain much info about or travel to different universes. So the answer would just be a vauge "other stuff."
