I apologize in advance for *possible* over use of commas

1:
I sleep in the ocean, a large drinking glass,
I am used in potions, healing, and mass.
I am the rythym of the waves,
I hit the beaches and the caves.

What am I?

2:
One word am I, I travel back to here,
I go at speeds that many would fear,
Competing against others to get first place,
I always try to win first place,
My name is the same, front and back,
Cheer for me when I'm on the track.

What am I?

Papa and Dan are right (I need better riddles!) Feel free to add your own.

3:
I can help you see what is far
I can travel with you in the car
I have been used in times of old
I've shown land and stars and wonders to behold!

4:
Often am I overlooked, so often am I used
It's me you find when your body is tired and bruised
So long ago I could not move, but that all has changed
Sometimes on me your arms can rest, or your back if it is pained.

What am I?

(I think this one is a little more vauge)

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Those had both occurred to me as well (though I discounted a telescope as something that would normally travel with you in a car), but I still think map is a better answer. To be honest, I'm pressed to think of any answer better than map. But when I hear the correct one, maybe I'll soften my stance.

[Edit -- nope. Sorry.]

Posted by Jeesh (Member # 9163) on :

I was thinking of one of those small telescopes (or rather a spyglass I think is the proper term)

Maps also show only what is known. By "wonders to behold" I meant what is both discovered and undiscovered. With a telescope/spyglass you could find a new planet or star. not with a map.

On the other hand, a map does work for an answer. It can show you where the "wonders" are Both work. A double answer riddle!

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

Papa, I agree that map was a better answer.

The next one is a icepack or a heating pad?

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

I was thinking it might be a bed or a chair.

Posted by Jeesh (Member # 9163) on :

Hmm, ok that last riddle is really bad now that I reread it. If you still want to guess, your answers are wrong.

OK, a friend of mine told me this one and I haven't solved it yet.

This reminds me of my favorite riddle, as outlined in a comic book about the origin of the Riddler. The Riddler is being interviewed by a reporter.

Riddler: What's green, sits in a bathtub and whistles?

Reporter: I have no idea.

Riddler: A salami.

Reporter: That makes no sense.

Riddler: Sure it does.

Reporter: A salami isn't green.

Riddler: You can paint it green.

Reporter: A salami doesn't sit in a bathtub.

Riddler: You can put it in a bathtub.

Reporter: But a salami doesn't whistle.

Riddler: I know. I just put that in to make it difficult.

It was a palindrome. Racecar is the same front and back, so you were on the right track.

I hesitate to trot this one out, because it's kind of tired (from my perspective). If you've seen it before don't answer, as it is kind of a fun one to work through if you haven't seen it. From the old Infocom game Beyond Zork:

Katrain: A cold has to start somewhere, and its usually within a person where it mutates when it reproduces.

Then it should say the person who makes it doesn't know it, rather than doesn't tell it.

whats unsightly about a lotus' mature form (they are quite beautiful)

Katarain: The person who originated the cold certainly does not "tell" anyone that they did.

Posted by Katarain (Member # 6659) on :

A person doesn't make a cold anyway. They might be the vessel where it mutates, but it's not something they themselves made.

lol a very decent guess but again I wouldnt say their mature form is specifically unsightly, as it looks more or less the same as their immature form. Unless you think of a grub as sightly.

Is there some sort of rule as to how many guesses until the answer should be revealed?

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

It is not a cold.

And mushrooms aren't usually found singly -- they are in bunches, legions if you will.

again remember the "mature" form really is not different from the immature form. I am trying to emphasise that the MATURE form is unsightly when compared to the immature form.

I can concede that you might find large numbers of earthworms around after rain, but in the riddle I did not use rain to stipulate when you find them. What I am thinking of is ALWAYS found in legions and never alone.

Study this paragraph and all things in it. What is vitally wrong with it? Actually, nothing in it is wrong, but you must admit that it is most unusual. Don't just zip through it quickly, but study it scrupulously. With luck you should spot what is so particular about it and all words found in it. Can you say what it is? Tax your brains and try again. Don't miss a word or a symbol. It isn't all that difficult?

And another one of my favorites.

Multiply the number of each animal Moses took on the ark by the number of people who ran for president in 2004. Now take that number and multiply by the number of fingers you have. Finally, divide that number by two. What is the number?

Humean, nowhere in the paragraph does the letter "e" appear--is that the answer?

BlackBlade, that was the honey in the carcass of the lion that Samson found in the Old Testament. Which was no more possible for us to solve out of context if we didn't know the story already than it was for the Philistine men to whom Samson posed the riddle!

Edmund.

The queen of those who give us money for our calcium, that is, teeth (tooth fairies) is the Fairy Queen, or Faerie Qveene. The one who wrote seven [books] about her was EDMUND Spenser.

The bastard - at whom you shouldn't leer (King Lear, eh?), is Edmund, Oswald's son. One of his name was Edmund [Spenser].

So the answer is "Edmund".

So the answer is "Edmund".

Oy. Oy.

Is that a good or bad "oy"?

I'm not such a great reader of Yiddish.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

I don't know about good or bad. Just oy.

The thing is, Bunny, you are on your own separate plane, and it intersects with our world in a very few points. This riddle had very little intersection with my world. Not that that is a bad thing. Our minds must work differently, though, because after you gave additional hints, I was at a bigger loss, and after you explained the entire solution to the riddle, the only coherent response I could drum up was "oy".

Your riddling skills do not mesh well with my riddle-solving skills. Sorry.

I got as far as Edmund Spenser, but then I was stumped. Mainly because I originally thought Faerie Queen was written by Walter Scott and therefore the riddle's answer (obviously) was Alexander Hamilton (Bastard son of a Scotsman, Scott also being a Scotsman). However, when I discovered my error about the author I sort of gave up.

An entrepreneur has a plan to buy cases of widgets for $50/case, and sell them for $20/case. "If I do this, then by the end of the year I'll be a millionaire!" Explain how this can be true.

He's inheriting Bill Gates' fortune?

Or he's lost in the depths of his own mind.

Posted by SenojRetep (Member # 8614) on :

The cases he sells them in are less than 2/5 the size of the cases he buys them in?

Or, an alternative theory, he's actually living out Brewster's Millions

Nope to Jeesh and Nope and Nope to Peter.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

He is purchasing widgets at 50 Hong Kong Dollars and selling them for 20 US Dollars. Both currencies use the $ symbol.

Want to ruin me? Let me drink Coors
Though I have no beginning I have an end

What am I?

computer

The Tick: Afraid not, I am not sure how your answer even fits. A computer by itself cannot do any of those things.

what have I got in my pocket? [Wink] j/k [Big Grin]

Posted by Javert (Member # 3076) on :

You don't have any pockets!

Posted by Jacen (Member # 9543) on :

Ah, so you believe the more accurate question to be, "where has my pocket got to?" [Wink]

Okay, serious riddle: A box without hinges, key or lid yet inside, golden treasure is hid.

This should be an easy one. [Smile]

Actually, truth be told, she stole it from me without warning. Sort of a "yoinks!" deal.

This is a very puzzling combination of words to be read on an OSC forum...
