His feet are enormous, but he has a normal number of toes. When he's sleepy, he'll lie on his back on my lap and streeeetch and reach his paw up and touch my face. It's really way too cute.
Good thing, too. He's been way too much trouble to deal with; if he hadn't been cute he'd have been outta here.

It's funny, he looks just like my mom's tuxedo cat, who is also named Merlin. Though she picked that specific name because hers has a white patch right at the top of his black tail -- like a magic wand. Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :
What a cute cat! You can just tell he's got oodles of personality and is clever and active. I'm so glad you managed to find a way to work it out so you can keep him. A truly outstanding cat!

I picked the name Merlin because it was the one name out of a long list I'd suggested that both my mom and I could agree on. But I was quite chagrined about my lack of originality the day I took him to the vet and there was another black cat there named Merlin.

Thank heavens, he no longer attacks us. He was seriously scary for while there. One day we were outdoors in my front yard -- he had just adorably followed me around the neighborhood on my walk -- and he inexplicably attacked my leg rather ferociously. He was probably just playing but, as usual, the fact that I reacted with distress to being attacked caused the attack to escalate and the next thing I know there's this berserk little cat flinging himself through the air at me. I just remember hoping that the neighbors didn't see me as I slowly backed away while asking him "Oh my gosh, animal, are you insane?
Prozac is a magical thing. He's really quite sweet now. We've even been able to leave him and one of our other cats in the same room together (supervised) with no violence occurring. They have made no friendly overtures, but he has evidently concluded, quite correctly, that Allie is no threat and that he can just ignore her.
He's still extremely edgy about some things; there are just certain ways that he will not tolerate being approached and will definitely attack if you do it. But we've learned not to do those things, and he's learned to give us the benefit of the doubt, to a certain extent.
I've also done a woefully inadequate job of behavior modification. Normal cats stand by the door and meow when they want to go out. He starts zooming around the room, culminating in a very fierce attack on the chair where I'm sitting. Unfortunately, I keep rewarding the behavior by letting him out when he does it. If only he would meow more often I'd try to reward that behavior, but he's just not a very vocal cat.
