For those of you unfamiliar with this publication, On The Premise is an online magazine that publishes every three months. They present a premise - more like a trigger - to follow. They ask for word counts between 1000 to 5000 words (and they are firm on those numbers). The editors serve as the slush readers, picking the best 9, and passes them along for an independent panel to judge.

Although they are not consider a pro-publication, they have a list of prizes that could pay you far more than the standard 5 cents a word, depending on how long your story is and how well it does. For example, if you finish first, and write a story close to 1000 words, you'll receive a healthy 18 cents a word for your piece. (beat that Clarkesworld).

This contest has a premise that is right up so many hatrackers alley, Myths and Legends. In fact, I'm betting almost everyone has a piece resting in their trunk they could submit right now.

This is what I am hoping for, a support group like the WotF that WriterDan runs. Unlike WotF, OTP announces how many authors submit every contest (expect 200), is open to all (even pro's like Brad, Ben, Adam, Pat, Eric, and yes even you She Who Musy Be Obeyed), is not restrictive to speculative fiction, and will give you (for ten bucks) and complete critique with a valid reason why our story didn't make the top 9.

So we can do this a couple of ways, run this just as they do in the WotF group, or turn this into a trigger challenge - post 13 lines and have fun picking the best of the bunch.

So who's in? If interested, copy the list below and add your name.

It might be nice if someone mentioned somewhere here on the forum (yes, I know it's on the contest website, but that's on the contest website) that the deadline for this contest is

I'm a sucker for contests. I'm in. I'd prefer the WotF route rather than the First 13. I also think a combination of both might be fun, since we've done that in the recent, recent past.

Great! 4 so far with two others showing interest. How do you want to do this? Exchange scripts? Shimiqua and Owasm have already read mine (months ago), although I believe mine could use a bit of tweaking before I send it off.

Any ideas?

Anayway, I have a story I was planning on entering anyway. It's just a bit over one thousand words but I have to slightly tweak a couple of sentences to make sure it fits the premise, so that will take it over a thousand a little more.

Snapper,

I know OTP's deadline. I should have been clearer. I was inquiring about the deadline for the critiquing group. Since you are organizing it, what is the deadline for the stories to be submitted to the group for critique? Also, are you going with the WotF route, or the trigger challenge, or both?

Good question. How much time would everyone like? Does everyone have one ready to go or do you need time?

The contests deadline is about 8 weeks from now. We'll need to give everyone time to read and critique all the stories (if we don't get much more than we have now we should be able to read them all), and time for everyone to absorb and make changes to their script.

How about a loose deadline of Aug. 21. If you're not done before that, no problem but guarantees that you'll get a critique from everyone won't be firm. Let's guarantee critiques for any submit before the loose deadline be done returned by Sept. 11th, plenty of time to fix your script.

As far as anonymous, that works for me. Everyone will know which one I wrote but that's okay with me. Fair game since I'll know who wrote and critiqued what. If we go this route, would you like me to post the opening 13's as I get them?

Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :

Out of curiosity, why would you go anon?
This is for a contest for another website.

Posted by Owasm (Member # 8501) on :

Because, there be prizes! Arrgh!

Posted by axeminister (Member # 8991) on :

There's prizes for WotF too, but we help each other out.
Is it because there's a lot less entrants?

I'm just curious, not trying to be a stick in the mud.

Actually, I don't see a reason to go anonymous in this. It's not really a contest amongst ourselves but a critiquing group.

Owasm

Is it talk like a pirate day already? Or are you related to pirates?

Anon? Arrg... to be or not to be that be the Ghost of Davy Jones question.

Actually, I can go either way but it would be less complicated to use our names.

I may throw my hat in the ring...have to research a little first. Seems most of you already have something that would work. I need to start from scratch. (And I'm scratching my head now wondering why I'm considering this!) Oh, I know, it would be a good challenge for me because I don't think I've written a short story since college. I can't seem to fit a story into that few words. LOL First I will need an idea, form that into a plot, get a character, a situation.....

I'll make a final decision by the weekend.

Was the deadline of the 21st decided upon? And a format?

kls

BTW, I like pirates.

The anonymous request is from wolfcreature. I know the rest of you have no problem with passing critiques back and forth but WC is still the new kid and easing his way in.

I'll go with the majority but do think WC's input would be a benefit to everyone. I cannot stress on how throrough his insights are.
He can be blunt with his opinions but I usually find I agree with him.

I almost passed by this thread with no intent of coming back. I don't write "Myths and Legends" stories. But, as it just so happens, I came across some handwritten notes for a potential story that just might fit the trigger. I won't throw my hat in until I've completed my WotF critique group responsibilities, but I think this particular contest might push my writing abilities in a direction they've not been before.

What have we decided about the possibility of posting the First 13 on the board?

BTW...my kids like asking me this question when their mother is in hearing distance: "Dad, what's your favorite letter?"

"'S'. It comes right after the letter Aaaarrrrrr!"

Maybe we should give everybody updates on where we stand.

Snapper - story is written but I need to do some editing. I also need to rewrite one scene. I could be ready to send it to everyone in a couple of days.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Mine is written also and as I have said I just need to tweak a line or two to make sure the premise can be seen. But I may also add a tiny bit to make sure it's over 1,000 words. I can probably add to a description and/or add a bit to the five senses I keep referencing in crits to other people.

So if I did it this weekend the story could be ready to send out by Monday- I have a couple of other things to tweak. If everyone else is ready by then that is.

I'm with Wireless. No story yet although I do have several hundred words and some idea where it's going. I'm not sure how to fit the myth & legend into it yet and that's my hang-up. Should have something ready by mid-week. (Fingers crossed, although it's hard to type that way.)

For those of you not ready, no need to rush it. Still plenty of time. I am worried that a sudden flood of stories to read and crit will discourage progress.

This is what I have in mind. Hopefully this will spur participation and inspiration. On a new thread, those who are ready can post their openings. Then on this thread (don't want the entry one to get muddled), others will post to the writer that they are ready to read it (and perhaps offer advice on the opening).

Does this plan sound workable?

Two of my wife's ceramic pieces. She had both displayed while working on them and this opening came to me as I stared at them.

And I need to redo my story one more time. This story won't take long but the Q4 story, which also needs one more revision, will.

And now I can't find the original E-mail for that story someone sent, Most have deleted it by accident when I was cleaning out some old E-mails Or I'm just not seeing it, which sometimes happens. I apologize for that. It's not in the trash file either.

Well mine just went. And to think I had a whole five hours plus to spare.

Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :

OK, a question about OTP. I entered the mini contest and the submission was received. When I checked after I submitted the current story I saw that the entry was now marked declined. Is that because it didn't win, or because there was a glitch in the submission process. Only asking to see if I need to worry about the current contest.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

I'm not sure if this is the reason but OTP did announce the winners of the mini contest. You should have received a E-mail. I got that and a separate Newsletter. I think there was 87 entries, three place winners and maybe six (there seemed to be a contradiction there) HMs.

I also entered but didn't even get close my story is now on my blog even though you would have to scroll down a bit. Some day I will get around to putting it on my story page. I've posted a couple of stories there I don't mind not getting published.

There's also a rejection mini story I gave up on. Couldn't get it under 50 words.

Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :

Yea, LD, I didn't get the separate e-mail, only read the results in the newsletter. It appears that there is an issue with smishsmash for me. I'll give this one the weekend and then send a query to them.

Posted by Osiris (Member # 9196) on :

In my experience with other magazines with online tracking systems, 'declined' means they do not want the story.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

I would agree with the meaning of the word declined even though I have never seen it in a rejection E-mail. Hmm maybe once.

However, I believe we will know how we do way before we, over on the WotF Q4 thread will know about that contest.

And I would be surprised if at least one of us does get at least to the HMs. There are a couple good writers here and I think we all kept to the premise. Well, three of us anyway. I don't think I read the other two but there's a good chance they did too.

Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :

Well I've had a on-going e-mail conversation with them and evidently they did get the flash fiction entry, it made the finals but wasn't selected. They apologized for me not getting the e-mail result.

One thing they did say working against it was they get a number that are kid's point of view that are either their imaginings or daydreams. Mine was in that vein and that probably cost me.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :

Wow. Congrats, Ute. That meant you made the top 10%. I was sure my mini-entry had a shot. I was wrong.

Nice work. Hope you do better in the main contest.

BTW, expect answers around the tenth, everyone. I know from experience they read them as they come on, so the entries that were turned in at least a week before were read and teh better ones were set aside for the final decision.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Indeed congrats Ute.

With only 87, or was it 89, entries I thought mine would have a chance too but as usual I didn't get that far.

Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :

Thanks, but again not holding out much hope. I didn't get a lot of time to work on it given a busy schedule, computer problems and my incessant reworking of the WOTF entry. I think I got most of the comments from both of you in though, so we'll see.

Posted by Osiris (Member # 9196) on :

It convinced me to pay the $10 to get a critique of my story.

Of course mine didn't reach the finalist stage either.

Surprised that neither of yours did but we have one more chance, maybe two to get someone from here in.

Thought about paying the ten dollars for a critique.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :

I sent in my money and critique request last night. I also wrote him an email to accompany it. Now the editor is a guy I've talked to quite a bit, so I could describe our relationship as more of a personal one. It allowed me to respond, in my usual charming yet thinly sarcastic style (okay thinly may be a stretch), to whine about my rejection (so cool when you can get away with that to an editor). He sent me back a very enlightening response. I liked it so much I requested permission to post excerpts of it here.

If anyone would like to know what it said, email me and I'll fill you in.

Posted by Utahute72 (Member # 9057) on :

Well mine didn't make it either.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :

Tarl Kudrick, editor, has granted me premission to post excerpts of his email. I will omit the personal commentary on my writing but offer you this bit about his publication and the difficulty of selling to it.

quote:
The second thing working against you is, it's getting hard for ANYBODY to get into our magazine. In 14 published issues, we've had, what, five authors appear more than once? We've published something like 72 stories by somewhere around 67 different authors. Compare that to other magazines, in which the same authors show up again and again. More than that, every author we've published more than once (Ken Liu, Laura Loomis, you, Neil James Hudson, and somebody else I forget) have received at least one rejection letter AFTER having a story accepted by us. Ken, Laura, and Neil have all taken first place, and still had a story rejected by us after winning first place!

Why? Because we're dead serious about basing our judgments on stories, not authors. We might be the only fiction market where past success as a writer doesn't help you one bit. If Stephen King sends us an okay-but-not-great story for the next contest, his story isn't getting in. You think F&SF will say that? Even Ploughshares, a magazine known for its rotating guest editors (and therefore widely different kinds of stories in each issue), lets guest editors solicit up to half of each issue's works.

I was going to ask if you meant Tarl? I've e-mailed him a few times even though I've only entered a couple of contests. I have asked permission to posts excerpts from his Newsletter. He seems pretty nice.

But I'm not sure if their rules make it that much harder to get in. They don't go by the writer's name so pervious publishing or lack thereof doesn't matter but that doesn't influence how I write a story.

There will be having another contest at the beginning of next month.

I received my critique from Tarl. It is helpful, and I'll see if he minds if I share some of it with you all if you are interested. It might be neat, in fact, if we all shared the critiques with each other so we can learn from each other. Anyone interested?

I am in Osiris and I wouldn't worry about permission. You paid for it. It's yours to do with as you wish.

Sent, Snapper.

I didn't ask for the critique, but I would be interested what they told you.

Ugh, really? This is becoming a reoccurring problem with this e-mail account I set up for my writerly business. Okay, I'll resend in the morning, too sleepy right now.

Okay, I've sent to all three of you. Please tell me if you received it or not.

Got it. Don't know how you feel about it, but I found it spot on.

Got my crit and sent it to the four people who sounded like they're interested in it.

If anyone else is dying to know why I wasn't a finalist let me know and I'll send it to you as well.

I got yours Osiris. If your still having trouble with your email I could forward the crit on your behalf to Axe or anyone else who hasn't received it yet.

Thanks Snapper, I just sent it to Axe. I have another e-mail account I can send from if I have to.

Axe let me know if you don't get it.

I have received two of them, one from snapper.

I ran into a minor road block with paying for a critique. I would have to use my wife's paypal account which means I would have to explain it all to her first.

Nope. =(

Dustin, since some people got it and you didn't, I suspect one of two issues. Either my mail is going to your spam box, or that your host/server has my host/server blacklisted.

I know this is a lot to ask, but it'd help me troubleshoot this problem if you could find out if your ISP or hosting service has my service blacklisted. My service is called 'Bluehost'.

I use godaddy. I've tried this route with them with some of my customers, they don't want to bother with it.

how about axeminister88@gmail.com

gmail is awesome.

Axe, did you ever get this from me to your other account?

I talked to bluehost and it sounds like the problem is on their end and they wanted a list of accounts I've tried but failed to send anything to.

Sorry Osiris,
I didn't get it on either.

Maybe I'm not meant to read it.

No worries, I'll send it from another email account now. You should get it as the problem is clearly with bluehost and not you.
