RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) -- Saudi Arabia's religious police have declared Barbie dolls a threat to morality, complaining that the revealing clothes of the "Jewish" toy -- already banned in the kingdom -- are offensive to Islam.

I got a link to this in an e-mail. ( [Big Grin] to the person who sent it.)

But seriously, is Barbie Jewish?

That's it.

**Picks up the Hatrack Hotlin**

"Hello, President Bush. I've had it up to hear with Saudi Arabia. That's right. Suppose I tell you that I know a dude who says they got Nuclear Weapons? WIll that get you to move on this? How about a campaign check from Mattell? Ok. Bombs dropping in 15 hours? Got it and thanks."

Sorry folks, this had to be done. Next thing you know they'll say G.I.Joe is Jewish. I mean, I've seen a G.I.Joe naked, and I can tell you that would have had to have been one really botched bris if you know what I mean.

On a serious note Arabs, neo-Nazis, KKK, and other such groups will call something Jewish to insult it, ie the Jewish media, the Jewish government, etc.

Uh-huh. And Tinky Winky and Bert and Ernie are all light in the loafers, nudge nudge wink wink. And we won't even mention Harry Potter and Star Wars - you know where seeing those movies or reading those books will get you. [Roll Eyes]

In all stripes of religious fundamentalism, there are those who are just afraid that someone, somewhere, is going to enjoy themselves. In order to avoid that, they are going to associate anything they don't like with their demonized or marginalized group of choice. Why can't people just lighten up, for pete's sake? [Wall Bash]

Edited to add: When we catch up with Osama and Saddam, now we know what we can do to punish them - make them play with Barbie. [Evil Laugh]

Why is it that even though I despise all of the attitudes lma talks about in her post, the minute she started talking about religious fundamentalism, I wanted to defend them?

blacwolv...Is it possible that you feel that way because you think my comments lean toward the idea that fundamentalists are not entitled to their beliefs? Does it help if I say that this is not what I meant at all?

I believe that everyone is entitled to any belief they want to hold, no matter how much I disagree with it. My problem with them comes when they try to make others conform to their beliefs and attitudes by law or by brute force.

absolutely.

malibu barbie is actually derived from the yiddish word malibubarchaim, meaning 'to stuff the bra'.

So one wonders if there were Barbies more appropriately garbed would they be less against her.

And they're not the only one's saying Barbie is dangerous. Women's groups have been saying that for years.

Sounds reminiscent of Hitler's accusation that Superman was a Jew. (I believe it was prompted by a comic showing Supes hauling him and Stalin to the League of Nations to discuss their differences like civilized people...)

And no, I don't think this would appropriately produce an invocation of that Hitler discussion rule...it's got nothing to do directly with the Holocaust. Anyone with me?

No way Barbie could be a Jewish doll --

At a quiz bowl tournament at high school, the trivia question was asked (as part of the competition) "what is Barbie's (the doll) last name?" It stumped everyone because we didn't think she HAD one. But the judge said they HAD found it out (from the company web site, I think) and although I can't remember exactly what it was, it definately wasn't a Jewish heritage name. It was like Rogers, or Roberts or something like that. Maybe one of you can look it up.

Social Science Grad School Thesis Up For Sale:

In Western Culture there is an Internet Law that any discussion will inevitably lead to one side or the other, or both, being compared to Nazis.

Is there a similar phenomenon in Pro-Nazi Internet Culture and Eastern Islamic Internet Culture where every discussion on the internet will inevitably lead to one side or the other, or both, being compared to Jews?

If so, why? What part does their obvious connection to each other play in this phenomenon? Are there similar phenomeonon in Far Easter Internet Cultures or African Internet Cultures?

I see a $1,250,000 grant being arranged to study this over a five year period.

That's not Yiddish, it's Aramaic. And it means "malibu, son of chaim" [ROFL]

quote:
it definitely wasn't a Jewish heritage name. It was like Rogers, or Roberts
[Roll Eyes] And we all have "Jewish heritage names," donchaknow. I happen to know a Jewish family with the last name Roberts, as it happens.

No, the real reason we know Barbie isn't Jewish is the distinct lack of horns . . . [Evil] [Wink]

Kool information about Kal-el. I'm so changing my name to that.

Okay, so if "El" means "God," what does "El-vis" mean? HMMMMM?

"Kal" isn't all, it's easy (or light -- that is, not heavy). "Kohl" is all.

And el is better translated as power, although in context, it is sometimes used as one of His names. (And pronounced slightly differently, el just means to or by.)

So Kal-el is Light Power. Gosh, you gotta wonder how fast the Super-Heavy-Duty Power can move. [Big Grin]

I am not aware of any word in Hebrew that remotely sounds like "vis" . . . [Dont Know] [Wink]

It's not so much the bagels that are a problem on Krypton -- it's the lox.

According to my Reform Judaism magazine, which is where I discovered that Superman is Jewish,
Kal-El means "All that is God". If that's wrong what can I say, reform Jews don't use Hebrew too much.
