Okay, I'm supposed to drive down to West Point and visit you tomorrow.

HOWEVER.

You've yet to send me your digits and directions. And you aren't on IM.

*taps fingers*

I hope you aren't in class now.

I was sick last night, so i went to bed early, sorry.

Edit: I just tried to call you and you were not there, you are probably in class. Fooey. I'm going to send you email again.

Whoo~! mack's in Waterbury, CT! She's almost here!

(I'm pretty excited about her visit, there's so much to show her here! Even though I hate West Point, I realize that other people find it interesting. heh.)

Is this West Point the Army officer university? Or some other West Point?

Yes, JNSB, I am talking about West Point, or USMA (United States Military Academy). My husband is stationed here, and we live here. There's more going on at West Point than Cadet Instruction, believe it or not! There are even *gasp* enlisted folk here! [Wink]

Housing here sucks. I mean it really, really sucks. And the roads suck. But the people here (cadets, instructors, regular army, civilians) are terrific, and I know that we will be moving again eventually (it's a military thang), so I try not to whine about it too much.

Enough about West Point, though, how exciting is it that mack is coming to visit me!?!?!

Oh, and I have no idea how far Vassar is from here, but I do know that the Bronx is just over the George Washington Bridge. *smile*

I think it's hilarious that you invited mack to a place that you like to whine about! Don't worry about the enlisted part (*whispers* I was enlisted too - for 6 long years, although not in the Army). I guess it makes sense that the officers that teach there need a staff of enlisted people for support services.

If you want any advice on where to go or what to do, let me know.

If you have time, there's a pretty good trail to hike nearby. Here's how you get to it: from Washington or Stoney Lonesome Gate, go North on 9W. About the time that you finally start the last downhill towards Newburgh, you'll notice a blue historical marker on your right. There will be an area where you can pull off the road and park. From this point, you'll find a trail that leads to some excellent views of the Hudson valley. If you follow it a ways, I think it takes you to the top of Storm King Mountain. Highly recommended, if you have a nice day to hike it. There are also nice views from the top of Bear Mountain, but you can drive right up to the top and (as a consequence) there are many more people there, especially this time of year.

I can also give you all sorts of interesting information on the post itself, if you want to hear it. Get Jexx to take you in the library to see the rings. I'm told that the concept of class rings started at West Point, and they have class rings from as far back as 1837. The rings of Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Bradley can be found in the case, along with rings of servicemembers killed in most of the major conflicts in American history. For those who can't visit: http://digital-library.usma.edu/collections/photographs/classrings/. You will also probably like the museum, which is one of the best collections of military artifacts in the country.

I wish either of you had mentioned this visit to me. I could have set you up for a cadet tour or something similar. Oh, well. I'm sure Jexx has all kinds of great connections anyway, so it probably doesn't matter. Still, let me know if I can contribute anything at this late date.
