I just received this e-mail from my resident advisor here at school. This is a scary, scary twist on the date rape drug. Have any of you heard about this??

quote:

>dumping her at Bandstand Mumbai. Unable to remember the events of the

>AND sterilize their victims.

>Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals. Rumour

Long defeated sigh. I so want to believe people are naturally good. I see so much violence to the contrary.

Is castration of gang-rapers who use this drug cruel and unusual punishment?

I am glad that it is a hoax...but date rape drugs aren't. I am sure if it ever existed, those who rape would have no qualms to use it.

Aren't the drawbacks of castration similar to the drawbacks of capital punishment? Doing permanent, irreversible harm to someone who you may later find to be innocent?

Yes, I have thought of that, Geoff. I would certainly not suggest every rapist be castrated. I am thinking of situations where a strong case has been made that therapy has been tried to no avail and this person will keep raping after their prison term is done. It would be a punishment "option".

In that case, his prison term should never be done. Simple solution...

I meant as a way to ensure he never rapes again.

If there is truly a finding of very likely recidivism, and we can't find treatments that work, then life imprisonment seems justified. And is reversible in a limited sense.

We've discussed this so many times before. Why does one believe that removing the testicles will remove the will to rape? One does not need a penis to rape. Foreign objects do just as well. In fact, I don't mean to be graphic but I have a friend who was raped and suffered irreversible damage due to the handgun that was used for penetration. Yes, it was loaded.

Another reason for having longer sentences. In the mid-90s, there was a movement by prosecutors to commit sex offenders to psychiatric hospitals at the end of their sentence as presenting a danger to the community. I had two immediate reactions: 1) This is an abusive use of the involuntary commitment power; and 2) Why weren't they sentenced to longer terms if they were still a danger to others.

It's too bad they don't actually have that drug.

For couples like my wife and I, such a drug would have been a quick and easy way to avoid a lot of hassle. I think most people who are not having children would rather use a one time drug than have surgery or use risky birth control methods with limited effectiveness.

But yes, date rape is bad.

It is so sad to learn about the gross evil that exists in the world.

Perhaps removing the hands too would help? j/k!!

I don't know - one time drugs sound like they'd have to have serious side effects to be able to cause such a systemic change.

I suggested it more as a punitive measure to vent frustration, not to modify behavior. I was venting not suggesting application. I have no false pretenses that it would help anyone--beyond scaring away future rapers. I could see it abused by women who want to get back at ex's tho. I am reminded of a case I heard on the radio of two teen girls who accused a homeless man of sexual assault to cover their tracks for skipping school. He actually served jail time.

Of course I would never vote for castration.

BannaOJ, why discount a reasonable option based on a worst case scenario? Well, I guess handgun object rape isn't the worst case scenario, but how common is object rape in castrated men? You know someone it happened to so you see it everywhere. But as is always pointed out when I cite an anecdote, it does not equal data.

Such a drug would be wonderful for pets! Imagine, you don't have to get your cat spayed to help avoid unwanted kittens. Just give her an injection of Progesterex and be done with it!

I wanted to get a sterile female companion for my male guinea pig, but spaying is dangerous for guinea pigs. I sure wish I had myself a dose of Progesterex....

Pooka this actually stems from the other thread, and countless previous threads we have had. Rape is mostly about dominance and power, not about sex. If I thought that castration would actually cure a human of that drive for dominance and power, then sure I would be all for it.

However as anyone with a dog knows, the reason why you neuter dogs them at an early age is so that they don't develop dominance habits. Once they have developed those bad habits, neutering them isn't going to do a lick of good. If a male is past puberty, castration won't do much for behavioral modification.

AJ

(In fact you will still see dogs, both male and female, that were neutered or spayed at young ages attempting to hump each other. It is totally a dominance thing)

omg, we're not having this debate again?!

Tonight I'll have to look for my old links.

Hey, I'm all for cruel and unusual punishment. But if you let a rapist out early because of this, then you're really doing justice and crime prevention a disservice.

I was thinking, if this is true than why the heck did I have to go into surgery to be sterilized? I didn't think there was anyway it could be true.
