I travel with gadgets (iPod, GBA, digital camera) that will require recharging while I am in New Zealand. My father doesn't remember what style the outlets are, whether it's the same as the North American ones or those funky European ones that take plugs with circular prongs.

Basically, I want to know if I'll need an adapter, and I know there are Kiwis around here somewhere. [Smile]

Now, time to memorize the family tree so I don't mess up people's names...

I'm so delighted you are going to New Zealand. Well, wildly-jealous and delighted.

Electricity around the world

Lets see...it's a fairly rare one, but there should be adapter kits that have it.

That's a pretty cool link. Thank you. Now I remember why I used to spend so much time here...

No problem. Have to use it at work all the time. One note, check your devices to see if they natively support 100-240v operation, if so, you can get a cheaper adapter. Otherwise, you have to get one that does the actual voltage conversion. Notebooks for one usually have autosensing supplies.

The iPod supports both voltages, but I don't know about the GBA.

*Googles*

Aw, crap. Looks like the GBA is going to be problematic. My GBA AC adapter (which came with the GBA for recharging purposes) only takes 100-120V input.

Oh, and you'll need one of these for dial-up connection.

I recommend a prepaid phone card with an internet dial-up number. The Kia Ora card had nationwide dialup coverage.

Since you already have the outlet/adapter problem under control... When are you coming? Where will you be? [Smile]

I don't have a laptop, so portable internet access is a non-issue. It's possible that I'm simply going to be offline for the duration of my stay, so my PBEM game might have to go on hiatus.

I will scope nearby electronics stores tomorrow for such adapters.

We leave for NZ on Sept. 13th and leave NZ for home on Oct. 13th. We're mostly going to be in Christchurch, which is where my father grew up and is close to many of the people we're going to see. But I know Dad also wants to take me (and mum, but she's already seen everything) on a sort of tour of various places on both the north and south islands.

What sort of electrical socket do they use in New Zealand? I don't know the specifics, but I think they recently retitled it the Peter Jackson--Shire Folk Voltage System.

Hey Twink, while you're on your way, do you think you could make a pit stop in Hawaii and maybe stuff me in your luggage or something? I really need to get to NZ as soon as is humanly possible, and, well, I'm not very heavy...

Hope you have a good trip, dude. [Smile]

I am in possession of an adapter! And also two new games for my GBA. [Big Grin]

Why the urgency, Zotto? Are you marrying tt&t or something? [Razz] (Sorry, the rash of Hatrack engagements has kind of gotten to me.)

Although I'm 100% certain you're capable of googling a map for yourself, [Wink] and have probably already done so, here's one with major cities and regions. If you do end up coming to the North Island, as you said you probably will, it's very likely you'd come through Wellington, whether you go on the ferry or fly. [Smile]

The Ultimate Map of New Zealand

Now you'll just need a Bluetooth GPS and an OQO to run the map software.
