It was wonderful! I'm so glad I got to see it. dkw was really good as a swaggering usurper with a sarcastic wit. Her costume was really quite fetching -- even if it was male garb from the 14th century.
The director was Dana's good friend from Ames. We went out to dinner with him & his wife, plus one of the neighbors who played a "spirit."
The play got some great laughs. Especially the line about a "whole herd of lions" that dkw's character 'Antonio' had.
Okay, I admit it, I guffawed loudly and snorted a couple of times for good measure. HA!
I had to best the parents of the kid who played Caliban who were hooting and hollering two rows back.
At least I got better seats than they did. HA!
ALSO on this trip:
I got to spend time with Dana's folks and her brother.
Visited the two churches in her parish. I even got to run the taped organ pieces. I didn't turn the volume up high enough, but other than that it was okay.
Drove home in pouring rain and had to wait out a tornado warning by sitting in an Arby's. Yum.
Ate my weight in Reeses Pieces in an attempt to stay awake.

Actually, my favorite pun name in the play is that of Trinculo -- the drunken valet.
I could swear that the other actor who was on stage the most with Trinculo was saying it "Drink-you-low" at least half the time.
I chuckled softly in case I was just hearing it incorrectly. Then I asked dkw and the director later and they both humored me with a "well, Shakespeare was KNOWN for his puns, you know." The other reaction was "Um...sure...yeah, Bob..."
Suddenly I'm getting junk e-mail from hearing aid companies.
What's up with that?
I forgot to mention that I rode down to Ames with Dana's folks in their exceedingly immaculate camper van and we all went to the play together. And none of fell asleep at all!
Dana's folks are extremely nice and a lot of fun to hang out with. They fed me ice cream -- Heath bar on a stick by Blue Bunny. And before you ask, no, I have no idea what that says about their personalities.
We also went in search of the Iowa cicada. It is an elusive beast that may not even be a cicada. It is noisy, though. And we never did see one.
Anyone know what gets cicadas trilling in unison? Is it the presence of a female? Generalized advertising for mates? temperature? Or...the now popular theory that they've formed an orchestra and the little cicada conductor is up in the tree trying to get them in sync?

I've been striving for two days to think of a good shakespearean quote to congradulate you. I am just not as good as I hoped.
Midsummer's Night Dream. The epilogue:
Puck: Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue, We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call; So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends.
(I staged this in a College drama class as a plea from Puck for applause. You have mine.)

The costumes were really excellent, I think.
The main characters were given tights that matched in color based on their family relationships. The tunics were correct for the period and the locales (or so I'm told). Not bad for community theater in a medium sized town. Not bad at all!
The staging was cool too. This was a 1 act version of the play. In scene 1 was the shipwreck. They had a balcony running the length of the room, so the director used that as the boat for the scene of the shipwreck. Then the rest of the play took place in the "stage" area to the front. It was great because it meant that they didn't have to create a fake boat or clear that monstrosity away between scenes. They just abandoned ship and started the rest of the play.
