Anyone have any information about it other than what I could find here?

Just heard about it and am curious as I read all the books back in the day.

If you are not familiar with the Work and the Glory, it's an historical fiction series based on the early history of the LDS church.

It's the like the Left Behind novels for Mormons, only the writing is even more so and there are not quite so many wild flights of doctrinal fantasy.

I haven't heard anything, although I did read every one of the books.

Is that the same as this? Pillar of Light: The Work and the Glory

They don't seem to have much information about it.

Is the LDS church itself behind the production of it?

Yes, farmgirl, it's the same thing.

The LDS church is not directly involved with production. However, the auther is now an LDS general authority and the producer is Larry Miller who is the owner of the Utah Jazz, NBA team and an active LDS member.

It's by Excel Entertainment, which is one of the LDS studios that isn't owned by the church. I *think* they did God's Army, but I'm not sure.

I thought this thread was going to be about someone showing Glory (the Civil War movie) at the office.

I'll leave now.

I now see how this could cause confusion...

Has anyone seen this movie yet? It is currently in some theaters, including one near me. I haven't seen it yet, but plan on it.

Anyone seen it and want to comment on it? All of the reviews I have read on it are pretty good, even from non-mormons.

I didn't make it through the first book.

The movie is no more connected with the official church than this website.

It all depends on how much you like the books and what you expect out of the film. These two reviews might help clarify things for some:
Eric Snider's review

BYU theatre prof Eric Samuelsen's interesting review

sarcasticmuppet:

Excel is primarily distributes and markets films -- it's not an actual studio (although it does have its own record label). It was bought last year by Deseret Book -- which didn't have a strong music portfolio and had no film portfolio so it was probably a smart move on their part.

I went to it when it was in Logan. I really liked it, but I haven't read the books. I like how they portrayed Joseph Smith, but that was the one part my wife didn't like. The acting was overall well-done.

quote:
There's the facial hair über signifier: bad guys have beards, while good guys remain clean shaven. (In this film, Joshua Steed is clean shaven early in the film when he's still reasonably sympathetic, starts growing a beard after he's estranged from his family, and has a full chia pet bush on his face at the end of the film, when he's a wanted criminal, card cheat, and what's worse, Missourian). Well, Martin Harris has a neatly trimmed beard, because we all know what Martin Harris looked like, but it's very short and neat, while the bad guys, the Murdochs, all have really scraggly, slovenly beards. Ben Steed, the family patriarch, is hostile to Joseph Smith and a harsh and difficult man, and he's clean shaven too-the actor, Sam Hennings, has a face carved from granite, and is the most consistently compelling presence in the film. But Ben deeply loves his children and wife, and besides, he's going to soften towards the Church in the next movie, right? We know he will, because he gets to shave.

Eric is one of my favorite professors at BYU. We talked about the facial hair issue in one of my playwriting classes.

I realize that the movie has nothing to do with the official church, nor does it necessarily have to be to be relevant to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Ugh. I read into book 4 and then broke up with that boy and realized that I hated the books. [Big Grin]

I've heard two things about this movie, both from Mormons. I heard it was terrible and I heard it was good. [Dont Know]

I guess I'll never really know.

I suppose there's no truth to the rumor that he was called to the position so he'd be too busy to write? [Evil]

My mom and sister-in-law saw it. They both like it enough to want to go see it again.

Narnia, I got about that far into the books too. I don't remember why I stopped reading, only that I had lost interest for some reason.

I hope to see the movie at some point. But I'm not in any hurry either.

It took me forever to get into the first book, but when I finally did, I couldn't put them down. I finished 9 within about a month of finishing 1. Now I can't hardly stand to look at them. Some things are only enjoyable when you're 15, I guess.

We went and saw it last night. (It's playing in a theater in Atlee/Elmont, for the Jatraqueros that live in VA).

It was okay. It was better than I had expected, really.

Mormon films of this type have a problem in thinking that doctrine trumps characterization. Everyone in this film, with the exception of Ben Steed, is as flat as hymnal.

My biggest problem with the movie.
