It was like stepping into the backside of a Norman Rockwell painting -- behind the scenes -- where mom sneaks nips from her secret stash, Dad is giving the babysitter too big a tip, and Junior is coaxing the dog into a noose.

The City was crowded, wet and had a foul smell, like being trapped in a man-hole with dozens of unwashed strangers.

The hotel was designed by an insomniac and haunted by waylaid business travelers who never entered their rooms.

The barn, like the old farmer, leaned perversely into the unstoppable prairie wind.

The room was decorated with malice aforethought. If there was a discernible theme, I'd have to call it "revenge." Well maybe "revenge, but under a tight deadline."

It was like viewing Mt. Rushmore just after the guy with the jackhammer slipped and Washington's nose crumbled to the ground 600' below.

Although there had been countless years between visits to the Vet, the waiting area had that unmistakable stench that pummelled my senses with the intensity of a blast furnace and burned my eyes, nose, and throat to the point of tears...

It was a temple to a dead belief; a reliquary holding bits of dried up saints from a dried up religion. Its only remaining power was in the greed of the auction house.
