Today I brought my dog Merle to the vet, and outside there was a man walking a little black dog.

We got Whiskers 13 years ago, from the SPCA. She and the rest of her litter had been dropped off by someone. They thought she was a lab-beagle mix.

As Whiskers got older, she never got much larger (about 13 lbs). People always assumed she was a lab puppy until we told her how old she was. Then they would speculate: Lab-Chihuahua maybe? She does look a little like a Chihuahua in her face.

We've decided she has no Lab at all, but is probably some sort of terrier mix. But we've never seen another dog quite like her, and that has led us to wonder where she came from, and what happened to the rest of her litter?

Well, as I said, this guy was walking a little black dog, and I asked him if she was from the pound (locally SPCA) he said yes, they got her in March 1992. No question about it, this is Whiskers' sister right down to the skittish behavior and greying muzzle and eyebrows.

We got their address and phone number. I imagine we'll have a little family reunion. Like Snoopy at the Daisy Hill puppy farm. Neat.

Very cool. I wonder at what age they were seperated? Littermates often remember each other years later, if they were allowed to grow up a little bit together before going their seperate ways. Or so say a number of anecdotal accounts--take that for what it's worth.

Call me a dork, but I had to come back to post this. Glenn, I like you. Anyone who brings up the Snoopy reunion is okay in my book.

If I remember correctly, they were 15 weeks old when we brought Whiskers home.

Yes, I'll take lots of pictures. Then maybe I'll actually have to figure out html to make them available. I should have a contest to see if you can tell them apart.

The mechanics of that one would have been interesting. [Razz]

On a related note, I took my kitten home to my mom's a couple weeks ago, where her mother (the cat's mother, which is my mother's cat [Smile] ) still lives. They didn't recognized each other at all and my kitty hissed and spat at her mom. I was pretty surprised.

While I was getting my son to put the pictures of the igloo up, I also had him put these pictures of Whiskers and Jett up.

We still haven't got them together, although Jett's owners say they want to. But Jett is suffering from kidney failure, has lost weight, and I think they are a little hesitant to put her in an unfamiliar situation.

But they did send me these pictures, so you can see they're sisters.

I recieved word from Jett's family that her kidney problems had gone too far, and that she was "put to sleep" last week.

Although I met Jett myself, once, we never managed to arrange a get together between her and Whiskers. I suspect that this is a human concern more than a canine one, but it would have been interesting to see. My family also would have liked to meet her.

I kind of wonder if Jett's family would be disturbed to meet Whiskers now, as if they were seeing Jett's ghost.

It's also somewhat disturbing to me, knowing that Whiskers is 13 years old, and certainly won't last forever. But aside from lousy teeth, she seems to be in good health, for now.
