And there’s a lot going on in Ames that weekend. And we’re inviting over 300 people, almost all of them from out of town. Which means I’m blocking rooms at several hotels, which is nice, since it gives guests a range to choose from.
However. If people are serious about having a Hatrack Con that weekend, (and want to all be at the same hotel) I will need to choose one of the hotels and get a block of rooms that we don’t put in the information sent out with the invitations. Otherwise you might end up spilt up all over town.
So how many people think they might be coming? It’s the weekend of April 1-3. The wedding is Saturday, April 2, which is 174 days away, not that anyone’s counting. (That’s 4,176 hours, or 250,560 minutes, or 15,033,600 seconds.)
And, before you ask, yes, you are invited. Yes, I meant you.

I'm coming! And I so want to be at the Hatrack Hotel, not the extended family hotel. Or do I have to be at the wedding party hotel? Is that one different?

Call me a strong maybe. A week before Passover vacation, and just before the annual school Production means that I won't be able to get much teaching done anyway . . .

Hey rivka, if and when you find a decent price, will you let me know. I had the same reaction when I saw Hotwire's prices.

It is the unfortunate truth that flying into Minneapolis/St. Paul, renting a car, and driving to Ames may be cheaper than flying into Des Moines.

It's about a 4 hour drive each way from St Paul to Ames, so it's probably not worth saving 20 bucks over. Unless a lot of people were going to coordinate their flight times and rent a vehicle together.

*dryly* But flying non-stop to the Twin Cities instead of one-stop to Des Moines saves close to 4 hours.

Ah. That does make a difference. So you can choose if you want to spend your 4 hours sitting in a car or an airport.

It's really only 3 1/2 hours from the Twin Cities airport to Ames. And it's about 1 hour from the Des Moines Airport. So figure that flying into MSP is going to add 2 1/2 hours, plus car rental and milage.

But with all these Hatrack couples, maybe I'll get another chance to be at a Hatrack wedding some time

Kama, you've got to get on the ball. We've had, what, 4 or 5 hatrack weddings in the past year (a few more if you count people getting married where only one spouse is on hatrack)?
And I don't know anything about no hatrack romances. Nosirree. Not involved in nothing of no-such type, nope, not at all.

I will be travelling nowhere during those dates . But I'm happy for my reasons .
We need to have a Hatrack Cam Con or something... Local clusters get together, and the local video guru hooks up a decent cam and mike to the internet.
For those that cannot participate in the group, they can still be in chat, or on voice, or even have a cam to themself.

I will be there in spirit, dkw! I like very much that you are not stressing yourself out by counting down minutes, hours, or days! You DO promise to post many pictures, don't you?

Now why would I stress myself out by counting hours, minutes, and days? They make computer programs that do it for you!

We're hoping to attend, but cannot be sure of our schedules (or our ability to get there) so far in advance.

How are you planning on getting there Russell? If ou're driving, will you be driving through West Lafayette?
I'm a vague maybe, I'm going to have to figure out how to get there. If I have transportation I really want to come.

Not really. You could take it to Davenport and try to talk someone from Chicago into picking you up on the way through. I'm pretty sure AJ is coming. Or you could take it all the way to St. Paul and hitch a ride with someone who's flying into that aiport. But that would mean going 200 miles too far north and driving back, which seems kind of silly.

blacwolve, I will be driving from Chicago. So I've got a 7 passenger van as you all know if you can make it here, you can reserve a spot in the van. Steve actually said he's thinking of coming, so I think it is a 6ish hour drive but that might help with people who wouldn't otherwise be able to make it.
I'll probably be traveling on an Amtrak rail pass around then, so depending on which direction I'm coming from I'll probably try to catch a ride from nearby... but this is all 6 months from now, so I'll check in on travel stuff closer to the wedding when I'll know where I'll be...

dkw, are all the hotels walking distance to the reception? If not, may I request that the Hatrack-designated hotel be one of the ones that is? (assuming that's not problematic and keeping in mind that I can't actually commit to coming . . . )

(It is rather flattering that you're all getting together to celebrate my birthday, though. And yet, Iowa is a heck of a strange place to do it. )

So...I think I can get a flight into Des Moines that will arrive around 11 pm on April 1. I would like to leave around 2 pm on April 3. Anybody else going to be at the airport around that time? Other transportation options (I'm 19, so I probably can't rent a car)?

ElJay has already volunteered to organize shuttle runs from the Des Moines airport if needed.
Rivka, they aren’t. But we’ll figure it out. What I had originally planned, before people started talking about having a whole weekend gathering, was to have you stay at a house right next to the church, which is where both the ceremony and the reception were going to be.
But . . . the University Memorial Union has a hotel, and it’s only a few blocks away. I hadn’t thought of it right away, but it might be the best. It’s got a rec center with bowling and pool and such, and a food court which includes . . .Chick-fil-A! (Okay, now I know AJ’s coming.)
Your travel restrictions are from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, correct?

Just a note – cameras are not permitted in church during the ceremony.
The official photographer can take non-flash photos from the balcony, but no cameras in the congregation.
