Well, I'm not an American, so really, I have no clue.
But I can tell you that I think Brad Pitt is highly overrated, as is Tom Cruise. Johnny Depp, though, is kinda cool. I loved him in that pirate movie.

I would say he was A-list, but I don;t know about being more popular thean Cruise or Smith...they are a little more mainstream than Depp is, and a little more proven.

I'd say yes for all three. I think Tom Cruise is past his prime, you really don't see much with him anymore. I know from experience that I hear about Johnny Depp much more. I'd say Depp is as popular as Will Smith, I don't know about more.
I think those aren't really effective comparisons, though. Tom Cruise does almost exclusively action movies, and Will Smith almost exclusively comedy. Yes, they both have other movies, but those genres are what they're known for. Johnny Depp, on the other hand, doesn't really have an exclusive genre. It's like comparing apples and oranges (it's way too late to come up with original analogies) not especially effective.

If the two you're comparing him to are Tom Cruise and Will Smith, then definitely... if you compare him to Orlando Bloom, or Brad Pitt, or Matt Damon, it's a different story.
Though personally I like Johnny Depp so much more than any of them! I can't stand Tom Cruise, and I really don't like any of the others either. Brad Pitt sometimes, but that's about it. Johnny Depp is amazing. And I think he's often less "global" just because he chooses his roles so carefully... he doesn't act in just anything, only in what interests him, and what he thinks is a good movie to play in. So movies like "Finding Neverland" make him special, since he doesn't just appear in money-making flicks.
I'm kind of tired, so I don't know how much sense that made.

Would you guys say that Johnny Depp is one of America's favorite actors right now?
No
Would you say that people like him more than Tom Cruise and Will Smith right now?
No
Would you say that he is an A-list celebrity?
I suppose. He doesn't have the fame of say, Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson, or Denzel Washington...but he is well known.

I think that Depp is popular with a certain crowd. Cruise and Smith have a bigger base of support. People like Gibson and Pitt have a MUCH larger base of support. But Depp is more popular than those guys when you are talking to younger girls who think that Orlando Bloom is at the forefront of acting. I know that sounds offensive, it isn't meant to be so. You cannot deny the overlap between younger women who think that Bloom is great and younger women who think that Depp is one of our greatest actors.

I'm not american, but i think he is greater than Tom Cruise as actor. And when i write that, i must add Tom Cruise is a very famous actor for me. But in the major part of his movies, he is on the screen too many time. Movies serve him. Johnny Depp is more to serve the movie. he is more in the shadow of the movie.
That's what i prefer him.

Depp is certainly more popular with the younger crowd (read: my daughter and all her high school friends, etc.). However, I prefer the more experienced Cruise and Smith -- but probably just because I have seen them in more flicks.
So it may depend on the age of the audience you're asking.
But overall - the teeny-boppers are the crowd Hollywood is aiming toward -- so Depp is definately more popular in that market.

Having never got the popularity of either Cruise or Smith -- though willing to grant their bimbo factor -- the only choice is Depp.
And Choobak matched my reason for preferring Depp. The only roles in which Cruise served the movie rather than the movie showcased Cruise have been his roles in Rainman and Interview with a Vampire. I've never seen Smith doing anything that even vaguely resembled acting.

I wouldn't recognize Johnny Depp if he walked up to me in the street and punched me in the face.

I'll have to check it out. What's aggravating about Cruise is that he's demonstrated that he can act, it's just that the studios?directors? don't demand that he makes use of his Talent.

I understand. I heartily second Magnolia. He does some disturbing yet heart-breaking work in that movie. He's also a rabid, foulmouthed misogynist, mind you, so be prepared for that. A friend of mine was turned off by it and I felt bad cause he missed out on such a great performance.
