Tomorrow is the summer soltice and tomorrow night, we will have a full moon. This only happens every 19 years so make a note of it.

Last time it happened, I met my husband.

Thanks!
Does that moon have a special name? When the Red Sox won, they won under a Blood Moon. I thought that was pretty cool, in a prohetic way, considering Kurt Schilling's bloody ankle.

No special name that I know of.

The "soltice moon" is the moon that falls closest to the summer soltice but that happens every year. THe solstice moon always crests closest to the horizon. During the full moon the sun and moon are directly opposite each other, since the sun crests highest in the sky during the soltice, the moon will crest lowest in the sky. This means that the moon will look largestest.

It also means that we will not only have the longest day of the year tomorrow, but the night will be quite light as well.

Technically, the solstice is at 2:46am tomorrow. I'm not sure if that makes today or tomorrow longer.

Hm. Now I have to decide which day I'm going to celebrate.

Or I could do both...

Take this with a grain of salt, as I was told this by a waitress at a restaurant that celebrates every full moon, but she called this one the strawberry moon. Haven't the faintest idea why.

Looked it up and strawberry moon seems to just mean a full moon during June (solstice-adjacent or no).

Oh, that's awesome! I love solstices! Equinoxes are kind of cool too but wow I really love solstices.

Full moons are rather nice, too, and none the less for being common. [Smile]

Now if we had a lunar eclipse as well that would totally rock.

The harvest moon allowed people to harvest all night long before the cold weather destroyed their crops.

Since strawberries are currently ripe, I'd bet the same kind of thing applies.

(Goes to pick some wild strawberries - Yum!)
