I don't have the energy to read through the whole Freakonomics topic, but here is a thought I have been toying with besides wondering how a person with the intelligence of a five year old can learn about sex without being taught it. Stop lecturing. It has to stop. Rigid conservative values seem to resort in an irresponsible form of liberalism. Irresponsible liberalism seems to make those that are conservative feel threatened and feel that their values are in danger, which in terms makes them push for less social change. Somehow there needs to be middle ground, after all, both sides are simply concerned with the country and the world, they just have a different way of filtering this concern. There needs to be something between the extremes. Conservative types must realize that morality cannot be legislated. That you do not need to advertise marriage anymore than milk or eggs needs to be advertises. No matter how many people run around and party all night, most people, if they find the right person whill marry and have kids and desire domesticuty. By trying to force marriage on people it seems to disencourage them from it. I know sitcoms and my fear of weddings make me not want to get married. The fact is that there is no conspiracy. There is no need to constantly fight. We must, instead of separate ourselves come together and do the right thing and evolve to make the world a stronger place. Sadly, this will not happen, it is completely hopeless, yet I want it to anyway.

People will not stop lecturing. They know that when good people do nothing, evil triumphs - and lecturing is often the most they can do to support whatever it is they consider good. Consider the fact that even your "Stop Lecturing!" plea is a lecture.
Rather than expecting others to stop lecturing, a better solution is to stop being bothered by it. You are only really in a fight if you percieve it as a fight - otherwise you are pretty much just in a discussion.

Can't be helped. It's frustrating. Perhaps if we learned what is evil and what isn't... Maybe that would help. Instead of viewing it as a fight between good and evil and if evil wins the whole world will be destroyed and chaos will rule when this is the attitude that CAUSES the chaos in the first place. There is no threat but the percieving everything as a threat and fighting too much when we should try something different!

"Got Milk?" "The Incredible Edible Egg" These things are advertised. While people would buy them without the advertisments, the ads do increase sales. I think that this is really about the inherent differences between rhetoric and a flawed argument...or- let me put this a better way: all rhetoric is argument. But if it's not a solid argument that your audience agreees with, you're going to tick them off, right?
End point: maybe it's not the subject of the lecture. Maybe it's the agressive method that you find repulsive.
