You're moving out? That's exciting, but I thought two weeks ago you couldn't even find $15 to see OSC at a local con. Are you ready to be on your own so quickly? Or is that what the Alas refers to?

Well, if I'll be living alone, I will have a job. I'll have a lot more time for me and my studies. The only thing I will have to worry about is the cost of food. My loan and scholarships cover everything else. Oh, the downside is that I will be living with three other room mates, I'm sure I'll get used to life over there. As for the tickets, that's because I am currently unemployed. That will change of course. I will not be living in dorms, as you might think, I'll be living on school sponsored housing. In other words, Its an apartment complex about a block from Ikea, Starbucks, the city library and Costco. The school's students live there and the school covers some of the cost of living there because the apartments are rather expensive for a college student. I think it was 1400 for a two bedroom... The best thing of it all is that I will finally be free of my mind blogging brother and his insane demands. He's always acting like the king of some mountain.

Are you starting college then? If so, there are many sources of free food (though it's usually pizza, a steady diet of which is not particularly healthy or interesting). Many events offer free food to entice students to come. Many clubs do this. The church I go to feeds college students on Wednesday nights.
I'm confused. Why does living on your own make it easier to have a job? I think it would be harder when you have to do everything for yourself (assuming you aren't already doing that at home).
And to be honest, I'm not sure that I'm really more free when I am not at home. I'm going to make some assumptions about what life is like for you right now, and if I'm wrong, feel free to whack me. I make assumptions based on my life, and some of them are bad.
Now, granted, the dorms (where I live) are probably more restrictive than the apartments are, but still! I'm sure the apartments will have all sorts of fun rules and regulations, and YOU will be the one responsible for making sure that they are followed. You'll have to make sure you pay your rent and your bills. You'll do all your own shopping, all your own chores. But you can stay out all night, and eat what you want, and not do your homework, and play computer games all day. You can choose who you associate with, you have complete control over your activities. You'll have less of one kind of freedom and more of another.
Sometimes all that responsibility doesn't feel like freedom to me. I have quite a lot of autonomy while living with my parents, and not a whole lot of responsibility. I have a car here at home, and not at college. I get good meals here, and somehow the refrigerator is always stocked (thanks, Mom!).
I'm not trying to rain on your parade here. You should be excited! This is an important step in growing up, and it's pretty cool. Anyhow, maybe at home you have more responsibility and less autonomy than I do. And I have to say that it's great fun being an adult and making nearly all my own choices. I wouldn't go back to being a child, and my days of spending extended time at my parents' house are rapidly coming to an end, as they should. I'm just trying to point a few things out, so you know what you're in for. Maybe you have figured much of this out already, and I'm just boring you with stuff you already know. Sorry.

AoD - I remember moving out. I was 17 at the time and left to go to university. I supported myself all the way through, lived cheap, had a ball and wouldn't have missed doing it for the world!

I'll be living at Mission Valley in San Diego CA. My major will be Media Arts and Animation at the AiCA-San Diego (The Art Institute of California - San Diego). Being on my own will probably make it concederably easier to become real. Who lives around the San Diego area?

Good luck. I just finished my first year on my own, and I've never worked as hard. It's sad, really, because I have kinda lost my social life in order to pay the bills. Don't fall into that kind of trap - working over 40 hours a week leaves you with no time and no energy to spend with your friends. Don't lose touch with your friends, no matter what. I am taking out loans and stuff. I also plan on doing that "work at home stuffing envelopes" thing. I don't buy that "make 3K a week" thing, but I'd want to try it at least since it might end up being true and I wouldn't want to let the possibility of it pass away.
