They don't know for sure, however different sources have reported the following:

I guess you all know by now that the autopsy report showed that 6 people were alive when the plane crashed. I was touched by the message one of the victims sent to his cousin ("we are frozen, farewell cousin", something like that anyway. And it is sad that so many children were killed.

I was just watching MSNBC just now at 4:45AM and another one just fell around Venezuala. Atleast 150 people are dead.

Yeah - the guy that reported to media that he got a "text message from his cousin" was arrested -- because there was no such message, and he didn't have a cousin on that flight.
People are just weird.

Does the hull of the plane block signals entirely or is it a matter of altitudes? I'm wondering if it's possible to cache messages while at 30K and then when you get low enough for the towers to pick you back up, the messages would finally transmit.
