It does have a sense of humor to go with the bite, no?
It just seems that so many adults assume the very worst of anyone entering this time of life, and (just like when I was pregnant) immediately launch into their opinion-giving on the state of youth, and how woeful it is . . . and in front of my soon-to-be 12 year old, to boot.
I just remember hating it when adults did that to me as I approached 12.
They'd shake their head and proclaim to my parents, "Oh dear - now the trouble begins. We're so sorry for you." As if they were handing off a death sentence.

Thanks, Shan. I always hated it -- still do, really; I'm barely out of my teen years -- when someone would make unkind generalizations about my age group. I was a fairly well-behaved teenager, as were most of my friends. We kept out of trouble, we volunteered our time, and we worked hard in school. Maybe I didn't always keep my room clean, but I was hardly a juvenile delinquent.
Yeah, teenagers don't have a fully developed pre-frontal cortex. They can be somewhat immature and inexperienced. I would argue, however, that most teens are good people, and reasonably responsible as well. I didn't mind advice from adults when I was younger, but I did appreciate being treated like an adult rather than a child, particularly as I approached legal adulthood.
