What does it mean that my skin (primarily on my back) is very sensitive? Touch is painful, but I have to wear clothes because otherwise the cold is just as bad. When the clothes don't move much against my skin, they act as a protective barrier. (And it's not that cold in here.) It kinda feels how my skin would when I had a fever when I was younger. I wonder if I'm coming down with something.

I've felt this before, but I don't know why. So I'm not too worried about it, but my DH is. He's had the same painful sensations on his legs for a while and can't get a doctor to tell him why. He did some 'net research, I guess, and says it's called neuropathy. *shrugs*

Anybody know what this is caused by?

You seem to be describing hyperesthesia. Hypersensitivity to touch. You haven't mentioned burning or tingling or numbness, those usually occur with neuropathies. What does this painful touch feel like? What time frame are you talking about?

Causes of neuropathy are varied, from diabetes to vitamin deficiencies to autoimmuned diseases to spinal damage. Tons of causes. If this pain is new and is only on the right or only on the left it could be shingles, or post herpetic neuralgia, but if it is the entire back that is unlikely.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were coming down with something--this kind of sensitivity is often the first sign that I'm getting sick.

Yeah, I think I'm coming down with something. I feel nauseous on and off. Touch can feel like it burns, but it's not like the skin burns on its own. And it's not just my back anymore.

Yay sickness. I gotta finish my paper!!

I'll manage. Thanks for the replies. [Smile]

Oh, and I have a low-grade fever, too. Maybe I can get an extension on the paper, seeing as I've had multiple migraines too in the last 2+ weeks.

This is an interesting topic for me-- I happen to be writing a sci-fi story in which the main character is afflicted with an extreme sensitivity to touch.

I don't have anything to add beyond what Theaca said. What is your "DH"? Do you have a designated hitter?

Feel better.

I'd cut down on or switch your laundry detergent.
And possibly add another rinse cycle.

Remember those "miracle" laundry balls that they useta sell as replacement for detergent. They "worked" because 95%plus of the cleaning is done strictly by the agitator action in water alone: the laundry woulda come out just as clean without the "miracle". And the tv infomercial conmen selling those "miracle" balls were relying on folks not knowing that fact.

The detergent is for that last percent or so of cleaning. And for breaking up really bad stains or heavy oils/grease.
Even to take care of that last percent or so of cleaning, only about a quarter to a half of the amount of detergent manufacturor's recommendation is usually more than enough for most laundry. Unless ya work as a mechanic or a restaurant cook.

Nearly every time that I've felt that hypersensitivity/pain on my back, it's been because I used too much detergent in a load, didn't rinse the load enough times, and/or the manufacturor had changed the chemical formulation of their product.

Some women say the initials stand for darlinghusband, TanteShvester.
Then again, some are braggin' that dependably swinging a big bat is what makes him so darling.
