There's a TV version of Once Upon a Matress right now on ABC, with Carol Burnett in the role of Queen Aggravain. I'm really amused by this, considering that way back when, she played Princess Winnifred. I'm kind of excited, since I absolutely adore the musical.

Go, watch it now! Go, go!

Did you see the show before the tv version? Cause I'll admit it's lacking quite a bit of the magic that made me love the show in the first place. Eh, that's the way things go.

Also, they left a lot out of "I'm in love with a girl named Fred."

No, this is actually the first I ever heard of it. I mean, I know the story but I never heard of it being acted out before. But then, I am very uncultured. Btw, is the Lady ... whatshername ... blonde haired chick. Is she the same girl from Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy and Elf? Something about her seemed familiar.

Yes, that'd be Zooey Deschanel.

I knew she looked familiar.

I'd heard about the play but never seen it; the movie (particularly the musical numbers) made more sense to me when I remembered it was originally a stage play.

We watched it with our children (all under 8) and I was particularly amused with the scene between the Prince and his father, when the King was trying to describe the wedding night without speaking. I was a little apprehensive, actually, but I cracked up when the Prince got from "seed ... flower ... man ... woman ... stork" to "Oh! I see! It's not a stork at all! It's very interesting." Hilarious, but totally incomprehensible to my little ones who didn't know WHAT they were talking about. (Thank goodness!)

As familiar as I am with musicals, Mattress isn't one that I'd ever seen before. I didn't expect it to be so silly (and silly in a good way), but after my initial surprise, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Oh, and I thought Tracy Ullman was perfect for the role of the Princess.

I'd never seen it before, but I had heard most of the music, done as solos and the like. I think I would have like Carol Burnett better as the princess. Both young men (The prince and Larken's love intrest) seemed weak to me, less so the prince.

Carol Burnett is WONDERFUL as the Princess (at least, the cast recording I have that includes her). I adore the silliness. I should say that the original was intended to be much more...adult...than the tv version last night was--hence, King Sextimas, the affair between the Queen and the Wizard, and Larken getting pregnant.

In my high school's production, the person playing the king got into a little bit of trouble one night for drawing illustrations in chalk on the stage floor during "Man to Man Talk." [Big Grin]
