So, I'm a PC gamer. Not that good in any particular genre, but still happy to have fun with an explosive battle on Starcraft or something like that.

There are a couple of insanely ambitious games coming out in 2007, just posting them here for anyone interested.

Supreme Commander

The spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, this RTS looks incredibly refined and shows good potential. Disposing of the rock/paper/scissor balancing that plagues most modern RTS games, the developers are going after the simple formula of common sense: if it's big, it'll win. And with the ability to cover the entire map with nukes--not to mention the intensely huge size of the maps--this game looks like a winner.

Here's the official trailer

Spore

In what looks like Will Wright's most ambitious game, players will be able to create and evolve their own unique creatures, populate a world with them, and guide them along the intellectual path that leads to not only conquering the world, but also conquering the galaxy.

OK, that was a bad description. For a better description, watch one of the videos below. The first one shows only the gameplay, while the second one also gives an explanation of the idea behind it. I assure you, you'll probably have a hard time stopping in the middle of the videos--it just gets bigger and bigger!

Here's the home page for SPORE

Here's the video of only gameplay (Warning: low resolution!)

And here's the longer, more detailed video (still low resolution)

Feel free to share any upcoming games that you think will be really, really good.

Coincidentally, these are the exact two games I've been waiting for as well, since last year! I think that SC will be the most fun out of the box, but Spore looks like it has some serious staying power.

To be honest, these are pretty much the only two PC games I'm really looking forward to. I just got into total annihilation a few months ago, and I wish I hadn't passed up on it when it first came out.

This is the first I've heard of SPORE. I just watched the video on gameplay and I am sold! It looks incredible.

I've been waiting for spore since the first Hatrack thread about it some months back. It looks like the kind of game I'm going to play obsessively for 50-60 hours straight then lose interest in, but always be able to come back to.

I hadn't heard about Supreme Commander until this thread, but I loved Total Annihilation and if this game is in the same vein, I'm excited!

Anyone here play Rise of Legends? My roommate and I just got it, and it's a pretty fresh take on the RTS genre.

Rise of Legends?

Nope, but I have been playing Rise of Nations. I bought the Gold Edition about three weeks ago, and I'm seriously loving it. Integrating Civilization into an RTS is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Plus, I bought it when it was only about $30, so I think I got my money's worth out of it. Pretty good for a game that was originally released way back in 2003.

Not only is Supreme Commander in the same vein as Total Annihilation, but it was also designed and created by the same guy--Chris Taylor.

Probably the only reason it isn't called Total Annihilation II is because Chris Taylor lost the rights to that title.

Also--are copies of Total Annihilation still being sold? I've never played it, but Supreme Commander has me interested.

Rise of Legends is the sequel, and is about 100,000 times better than the original. Worth your money!

Supreme Commander looks awesome as does Spore.
I wonder how far spore goes.

I am looking forward to the game Force Of Arms.

Supreme commander game looks fun. I always get a kick out of how these RTS units are supposed to be so futuristic but they still have to get within say a few hundred yards of each other to be within range.

Pretty sure an abrams tank has more range than those giant land walker laser spraying units had

ah well, nature of the beast i suppose

I'm with you there, a wing of stealth bombers or a real nuclear submarine would mess up that fleet. We're supposed to believe that futuristic combat will be centered around battleships that are advanced technology because they have lots of pointy things?

Anyway it only increases my desire to blow them up, although I'll have to wait a little longer until it comes out for Macs.

Heh. I started looking at Supreme Commander, 'cos I liked Total Annihilation. So I got about three sentences into the blurb, and then :

quote:
Infinite War rages between three diametrically opposed factions
Well, that's a good trick, that is! Somebody needs to retake geometry.
