Has anyone here had any experience making silicone and resin casts and molds? I'm looking at trying it myself, and I wanted to know if there are any particular things I should look out for.
I invented a couple of board games (one is just an adaptation of an existing board game to more than 2 players), and I want to make them. But I'm artistically challenged. Unlike everyone else in my family, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler.
So I figured my best bet would be to make the board and pieces out of Sculpey, bake that, and use it as a master. Then I can pour a silicone mold, and use that to make copies with pourable resin. That way, I don't have to make it more than once, and I can mess with it as much as I want until I bake it.

Heya! Yes, I have a bit of experience with resin casting and making silicone molds. But in order to help you intelligently, I'd need to know what your pieces look like, size, whether there are "undercuts," etc. Do you have sketches or can you easily describe them? If so, I can work up a quickie tutorial on how to go about it.
The only unfortunate thing is that I don't know of any smaller quantities for mold rubber or resin than a gallon - which runs about $80 for each component, not including shipping, so it could get pricey. If money's not an object, I can recommend a few good suppliers - or if it is an object, I can recommend a friend who does casting and who would undoubtedly love to do a simple mold and a few castings for you, if all you need is a few. She wouldn't charge much, if the pieces aren't terribly complex. Just let me know!

Oh - a more cost-effective way might be to make a press mold for polyform clay. I just thought of that. Let me know what your pieces look like. It's most likely possible. You can email me at mistrettaphoto at gmail.com if you want!
