I already asked fugu about this, but I thought you guys might have some more ideas.

See, I hurt my back, and it hurts for me to be sitting up too long, so my doctor gave me this pain medicine (Butabital, aspirin, and caffeine combo) to help with the inflamation as well. Unfortunately, I think it's lowering my blood pressure. I've been feeling a lot more lightheaded when I stand up, and when I went biking yesterday, I just felt really weak and ended up having to walk the bike back home, kind of feeling like I was going to faint. It was like, I don't know, I just felt very weak in my limbs and sort of floaty. I was wondering if there was anything (besides drinking water and such, which fugu said to do) that I could do that would make this a little less noticeable, since I really want to be able to keep exercising (though not doing anything that would aggravate my back) while this is healing.

I did call the doctor, and he just said to be careful standing up and to stop taking it if it gets too bad, but if I stop taking it I won't be able to move very well, much less exercise.

If you are reacting badly to the fioricet, ask your doctor if there is something else that you can take instead. I'm sure that there's something. And it is a kind of weird choice for backache, anyway. It is usually given for headache.

The butalbital is a narcotic, and some people do not react well to those. Perhaps a nice NSAID, with a muscle relaxant at bedtime would do you better?

He doesn't want to write for anything that ends in "cet." I don't know. A muscle relaxant probably would work better. I had a prescription NSAID bottle lying around, but I only have one or two pills left. I feel weird asking for specific medications, and he said when he prescribed it that if this stuff didn't work, the next step was valium.

I just don't want to call and be like, "Hey, doctor? Can I get that valium now?"

You don't have to say that, silly. Just call them up and tell them what you've told us, and ask if there's something that doesn't cause those side-effects.

Ni!

If it ends in "cet" that means it has Tylenol (acetaminophen) in it. You know, in secret doctor code. So, the butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine combo you have, also known as Fioricet, also known as Esgic, IS something that ends in "cet".

You don't have to tell the doctor what to prescribe, just tell him that you are having uncomfortable side effects and that the medicine is making you feel impaired. Ask if you can have something else to manage the symptoms.
