I have a relatively new (1-2 year old) rarely used DVD player--RCA.

It has a problem. The DVD's go light then dark then light then dark. It really gives a headache to anyone watching.

Any ideas about what I could do to fix it, other than toss and spend another $50?

(It sits atop my Sattelite box. could that have thrown off any magnets or such?)

That sounds like what some players do when they are connected through a VCR without using an RF Modulator. I think it is due to copyright protection. That might not be your problem though.

I agree with solo, my dvd does the same thing when hooked up through one of my VCRs. It works fine when connected directly to the TV.

Dan, is your player hooked directly to the TV? If not, try that.

I actually know this for a fact and yes solo, Morbo and Mucus are right. It is part of the security features so that you can't tape movies onto VHS from your DVD player. Try connecting straight to your TV with either SVHS cable or component (RCA - Red, White Yellow Colored Cable). If there is a coax (TV Cable) connection on the DVD player use that, most of the time if I connect through coax the dark/light thing doesn't happen.
