I was told this back in the fall of 1998, when the books were starting to get a real buzz.

I wouldn't break down and purchase book one until the spring of 1999...upon which I quickly purchased books 2-3 the very next week!

Soon it'll be a decade after the first book was originally published.

Flavor of the month?

Not so much.

My mom just started reading them this year. It's cute, she'll read one and then watch the movie.

Has it really been a decade?

I resisted until Goblet of Fire was released. Some friends talked me into trying them and my younger brother already had the first two books.

I've gone crazy waiting for all the books and movies since then, so I can't imagine a decade of being hooked.

I've enjoyed the movies. The books don't do too much for me.

I never really got into it until the 2nd book, but once I did, I was hooked. The bookshop that my mom works at has a midnight opening every time another book comes out. I get all dressed up and almost always get the first book out of the box. It is amazing. This is a phenomenon of epic proportions. Harry Potter will live forever!

I like to read them once a year too! I start in the fall around Halloween. For some reason the smells of autumn make me want to read them.

They are enjoyable reads, but I don't see why people love them *so much*. They've got their share of maddening flaws, especially books 5 and 6, and there are lots of books as good or better. But everything is Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter like Rowling is this terrific writer. I don't understand it. I've read them all several times, and I certainly will read the 7th and watch the rest of the movies, so it's not like I don't like them. I just don't quite understand the fervor.

I thought the first and second one was ok, nothing special. About the third book I got tired of the characters and endless descriptions of magic school. The forth book bored me to tears and felt way too long for any enjoyment; and I never tried to finish. Haven't picked up any after.

The movies have been more enjoyable. At least they last only about two hours.
