Spike! Optimus! Bumblebee! The old sound effects!

Trust me when I say this trailer was the most enjoyable thing about Shrek 3. [Razz]

Old sound effects = good. I'm still a little concerned about how much of this movie is going to be focused on the humans. I always found the humans to be the most boring part of Transformers media. Maybe this movie will change that though.

The Transformers are actually a metaphor for the emotional journeys the humans are undergoing from show to show.

At least that's how I understood it when I was a kid. Don't know if anyone else saw it that way.

Much more impressed by that trailer than previous ones.

And technically the Decepticons can't be "anything." They can only be the one thing they can turn into, and since there aren't endless numbers, all it takes is some decent record keeping.

You forget that part of being a Decepticon is being a filthy liar. For all you know, they -tell- the humans: "We can become anything!" ...and then a tiny instant camera splits up into three giant robots. [Eek!]

1) "They can be anything" refers to the group ability, not to any individual Transformer's ability.
2) It's extremely unlikely that a robot from another world would originally have secondary shape that looks like a Camaro/etc. So it's extemely likely that they individually chose which Earth shapes would provide effective camouflage that could contain the mass and the flexibility of their own individual primary robotic shapes. That being a given, it is likely that they can change their secondary shapes into something different.
That they don't habitually morph into different objects only indicates that such morphing would be a major modification requiring a significant amount of time&effort. ie Gaining the ability to change into a significantly different new camouflage shape would require the equivalent to undergoing reconstructive surgery.

I don't like the "busy" look of these robots.

I think they were designed to play big in Japan, not to appeal to those of us who mainly remember the old cartoon and movie.

I also agree with whichever talkbacker on AICN said that Michael Bay's history with Transformers probably consisted of having seen the old movie once. And he was all, "Hey that one leader is Optimus and that other leader has flames. Let's put 'em together!"

I really liked the Decepitcon skating down the freeway. Nicely animated.

I still don't get why they felt the need to subtly change all the vehicles though. They still have lots of Bugs on the road. An F-15 isn't obsolete yet. Silly movie makers.

At least the acting doesn't look horrible.

The F-15 is being retired; there ain't all that many left in service. And it's being a little too nostalgic to expect a group of robots arriving in the presentday to ignore presentday vehicles in favor of '80s vehicles. eg A cassette player is not sufficiently ubiquitous to allow Blaster or Soundwave to be an effective spy.

I'm fine with having them transform into equivalent vehicles. Bumblebee, from the look of the trailer, might still have been an old VW, but yeah, I think the jets and such could be updated. I'm even okay with Optimus not being a flat-faced trailer.

I just wish they didn't look like the jumble of extension cords behind my desk when they were in robot mode.

Good point docmagik. I'm more willing to give them the updated vehicles if the robots looked like there was any realistic sort of conservation of matter. Get those animators some old pictures and a couple toys. I'm sure they could make the transformers look awesome and futuristic while still keeping semi-close to the old look.

See the colors just don't feel right to me. A combination of what their colors were and what they could turn into made a transformer readily identifiable.

I saw a handful of decepticons, that besides having different weapons all looked the same [Frown]

Aside from all that though if I sat in a used car and saw the autobot icon, I'd drive it off the lot, no question.

Turns out that the F-15 is not being retired just yet.
Apparently the fact that you can buy ~3 F-15s for the price of an F-22 has caused the USAF to change their minds about their previously announced retirement schedule.

Yeah, that trailer was pretty delicious.

I've hated the entire idea of this movie from the get-go, but I'm slowly getting more excited to see it.

Oh, man. That almost made me cry. AWESOME. Optimus Prime looked great.

I agree the Decepticons looks a little too bionicle. But that part where Optimus, and I assume it is Megatron? go at each other?

SWEET!

I'll admit it, the trailer looked awesome. I'll just pretend this movie is called something else and has nothing to do with a cherished childhood memory.

A side note on the F-15. it's going to be around for a long time, at least until 2025, and the assembly line still is pumping out F-15's for S. Korea and Singapore. Not bad for an old timer.

Heh. Like Alternate Universe versions of the Transformers franchise were completely unknown before this film. [Wink]

This is hardly the first "different" take on G1. It's just the most high profile one.

In my lil universe there is only G1 and Beast Wars. All of the other ones are figments of someone's deranged imagination.

I was at Barnes and Noble today and saw the movie prequel book (Transformers: Ghosts of Yesterday by Alan Dean Foster), so I picked it up. I'm continuing my movie tie-in book reading habit (I read Spider-Man 3 before I saw it and I finished Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer this week). Hopefully this book will be good (it sounds interesting from the little blurb on the back).

I would just like to point out to the people who are a little miffed about new designs that there have been many many version of Transformers over the years and each one, even if they have characters with the same names and personalities of the old G1 characters, has had new designs with new or at least relatively different vehicles/animals/dinosaurs/other things.

While it might be more nostalgic to have had the movie more adhere to old G1 designs, its not the film makers messing with the mythology. Its the film makers following the mythology. This is just yet another iteration of the Transformers story with new designs, etc.
