...my local paper will have an article stating the following "facts" about SF:

  • Science fiction was invented in the 1950s!
  • The entire genre was a metaphor about how evil communism is, until, you know, Star Trek and stuff came around and made it about other stuff!
  • Speaking of Star Trek, until Mister Spock existed no woman was ever interested in SF, and the only reason any began to like it was because they think he's cute!
  • Maybe one day they'll write an SF novel that real, ordinary people can appreciate. Most of the books are fanboy garbage though! Stick to the movies! Don't even -think- about reading the literature!
  • Title of 1950s SF film being remade, and why it's either A) A brilliant re-imagining or B) an abomination!
  • Joke about how glad the article writer is he doesn't watch much SF. Except for Battlestar Galactica, but that's deep and stuff!

*sigh*

I suppose it could be worse. [Smile]

But it certainly could be better. Does it not occur to ordinary people that some of the best and most influential and important works of literature over the last century have been outgrowths of "science fiction," or speculative fiction, or futurism, or whatever you want to call it?

Is the article always written by the same fool?

...Sounds like a zombie H.G. Wells should strangle them in their sleep.

Now *that* would be a sci-fi movie I'd watch!

Huh. Mary Shelley knocks out the first three with one book.

I was going to say Jules Verne, but Shelley is a way better example.
