Over the next couple of weeks I will be covering China, Japan, North and Sourth Korea, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam. My students will be learning about the modern history and culture. We studied ancient Asia over the past month. I would love to have my students pose questions to people actually living in these countries. If anyone could lend a hand, or even point me in a good direction on the web please let me know. I can also be emailed stephan_nATyahooDOTcom.

I would really love it if I could find another teacher studying the United States in one of those countries. They were all fascinated by the thought that students in other countries might be learning about them.

My husband, Abhi, is an Indian citizen, although he's currently living in DC (with me). I'm sure he'd be willing to answer some of your students' questions. How old are they, by the way? Abhi maintains some ties to the private high school he attended, and could potentially put you in touch with his old social studies/history teachers (I'm very free with promising his time. [Wink] ).

My husband's family also lives in India, and I could probably get them to send a postcard to your class, if they're young enough to find that sort of thing exciting. (Free with promising the in-law's time, too! [Smile] )

We also have some very cool pictures of our Hindu wedding (in India) & of the following honeymoon where we visited two World Heritage sites with very old Buddhist, Hindu, & Jain temples. I imagine that you can find all those type of pictures on your own, but it might be fun to be able to attach a personal story along with it for your students. I have one really cute short video of a class of Indian schoolchildren waving at me in the biggest of the Hindu temples ('cause I'm white, and therefore have rockstar status in India).

Finally, I know that one poster here on Hatrack, Quid, lives in Sri Lanka. She's very good about answering questions about her experiences in the country (she's originally from Canada).

Wow. Thanks for the quick response.

7th graders in Lanham, just on the other side of the beltway from you. Small world!

At the very least if I could email some of the better questions (no more than 5 or 6) to your husband I would greatly appreciate it.

Its probably too late in the year to try and match up with another classroom, but any help for next year would be wonderful.

If the pictures are online I would love to see them. Even if I don't use them in class, I've been fascinated about everything I have learned about Hinduism. This is my first year teaching, so I am learning a lot of this material along with my students.

Hey - you are pretty close. [Smile] We're in Arlington.

Feel free to send any questions to me (email in profile), and I'll forward them on to Abhi. He tends to be very busy with work during the week, but should be able to get to them over the weekend. The pictures are online (although the video is not). Here's the thread I made about the topic, with links, a couple months back: post.

If you have any random questions about India/Hinduism, or want pointers towards some resources (good books, etc) feel free to post them here too. Abhi was a religious studies major in college with an emphasis on Hinduism, and has six years of Sanskrit study, so he's pretty good with those sort of questions. And I've picked up a fair amount in my studies as well. By marrying him I've semi-automatically become a Hindu (there's an opt-out option [Wink] but I didn't exercise it), so I felt I ought to study up on my new religion.

Great! I'll keep all that in mind. Tommorow I'll have each of my classes vote on 1-2 questions to ask, and I will shoot you an email.

Thanks again, and I look forward to his responses.

Yup, I'll answer questions, and yup, I'm in Sri Lanka, and yup, I've got photos online and a blog about life here, and yup, I'm married to a Muslim although I'm Christian, and his entire family is Muslim and I've attended Muslim weddings and other events. I'm not in one of the countries you mentioned, but if I can help, let me know. [Smile]

And Jhai isn't kidding about white=rock star status here. When you're white here, you learn to live with being stared at and hit on and talked to by absolutely everyone. [Smile]

Hey Stephan, I haven't heard from you yet. Just want to make sure my inbox didn't eat your email or something. [Smile]
