At last count, my Mother and Step-father have:

1 dog (A short-haired collie pup named Laddie)

5 horses (Rosé, Prince, Blaze, Buttercup & Star)

24 cats (Began with 3: Junior, Mini and Lucy. They had a total of 5 surviving female kittens a year ago who, just recently, have had 16 new kittens.)

Anyone have an ark to store these guys?

Or better yet...anybody want a kitten?

Do they not believe in spaying their cats? Are these show cats or something?

Well, they're barn cats, and they have over 50 acres, so they don't have a lack for room. Barn cats are also in a bit of demand where they are, so plenty of their friends and neighbors will be taking most of the kittens off their hands.

Very shortly Junior may be visiting the vet...

Ah. So they're not so much pets as animals that happen to live on the property and get fed.

I don't know. My mother certainly sees them as pets. They're all really friendly and sociable with people, in addition to keeping the place clear of vermin.

Hmmm - so there's one male cat, Junior, and seven female cats, of which five are his daughters? [No No]

Not only that, but he's not even married to Lucy or Mimi! [Wink]

So, is it better or worse to hold a wedding for the barn cats?

You could just do it like the Victorians did and assume there was some covert feline wedding at some point, and refer to the queens as "Mrs.".

But if we go all Victorian we're going to have to ignore the fact that Junior is a tom-- we won't even be able to say tomcat-- and that the kittens were ever born. Because thinking of giving birth might lead to thoughts of what led to that. [Embarrassed]

Sounds like the beginning of an FLDC (Fundamental Church of Latter Day Cats) enclave you have going there. I'm calling the state to have you raided.

About 10 years ago, we had 8 mama cats (5 were rather feral) in our barn have litters in 6 weeks. We had over 60 cats that summer, only 2 of which were allowed in the house. My children named all of the kittens and knew who belonged to whom, probably better than the kittens themselves, since they'd just nuzzle up and feed off of whatever mama was around. We had one hermaphroditic cat that would "steal" the babies and groom them and try to feed them. All of the kittens were affectionate and playful, since my children handled them from birth.

We were able to find homes for all of the kittens - we had the only ad for kittens in the local paper. A co-worker of my husbands took most of the mamas to keep down the rodents on his property. I spent a small fortune on cat food that summer, but it was so much fun. By the time it got cold again, we were back to only 2 cats inside and 2-3 males in the barn. We haven't had any female cats since.

Yeah, my mom's cats (not including the kittens, whom I haven't met) are all dear to her. All of them are let into the house on a very limited basis, and never all at once.

They have Junior, Mini and Lucy. The second generation are Spot, Monkey, Butterscotch, Flash and Fluffy.

Spot had 5 kittens, Monkey had 3, Butterscotch had 3 and Mini had 5. Now, apparently, Lucy is pregnant again. Flash and Fluffy are both too young for litters of their own.

Again, if anyone wants kittens, especially evil cult ones like these, let me know! [Wink]
