I’m about to ask any readers to try something, and it may not work. Here’s the thing, about a month ago I ran across this song by AWOLNATION, called “Sail”, and immediately thought it would be the perfect song for the trailer to Ender’s Game. (Yes, I’m one of many who want to see the book come alive on screen, not just in our imagination.

I immediately started daydreaming about what this song could do for the trailer as the song includes all of the elements of suspense, power, excitement, pain, risk, genius, etc. All of the same elements I found when reading Ender’s Game.
My initial thought was to experiment though the written words by having readers of this post start the song, and then read the scenes of the trailer I had in my head. Now I’ve changed that idea because of this youtube video a co-worker sent me today. Check it out!
Jeb Corliss " Grinding The Crack"

Not only does it have the song I’ve been obsessed with (even after hearing for over 50 times) for the last month, it gave me almost the same feeling I had when I would listen to the song and think of all the possibilities of using it in the trailer of Ender’s Game.

Now, if you would like, try this exercise and see if you “get” what I’m trying to accomplish. First, watch the youtube video, all of it, as there are some parts that will blow your mind. Second, don’t watch the video, just listen to the music and ether use the example I provide below for the opening scene text, or make up your own.

EXAMPLE: My “trailer” would start out something like this:
--music starts (0 – 17 seconds) – The following words appear on screen and NOT READ by a voice, but has to be read by the watcher of the trailer. Each phrase would fade in and then fade out. Black background, white words.
“The Earth was once attacked”
“Humanity triumphed”
“Ender is just a boy”
“Ender will save the World”
“Our young ones prevail”
--music picks up (18-32 seconds) The trailer would now switch between maybe 4-5 favorite one liner phrases and the associated scenes of the movie (YOUR CHOICE)
--music (33 seconds to whenever) When the work “Sail” is sung in the song, this is the peak of the trailer, and could very well end there. Maybe a screen shot of Ender Jumping out into the “game” for the first time, I don’t know, but the youtube video sure provided me a possible scene for the trailer.

Now your turn; let me know if think this exercise sucks, or if it was fun. I’d like to know what your opening words would be, and the scenes from the movie you’d include in the trailer, and what scene you’d have when the song and trailer hits the peak when the work “Sail” is sung. Or maybe you have a different song in mind, with a different idea fer the trailer. Please share!

What the what? That video is insane!!!!

As for the trailer, I'd have it start out with some Trent Reznor instrumental.
- From the creative team who brought you Mission Impossible 3...
- And Watchmen
- And Star Trek
- And Cowboys and Aliens
- And the television shows Fringe and Alias
- Comes
- Ender's Game
- Forget that they made Transformers. We like to blame that on Micheal Bay.
- Fade to black

My idea for a good teaser trailer would be this:

Cold open on an orbital view of Earth.

opening chords of "Everything in its right place" by Radiohead.

Long, surprisingly long, swinging wheel of the battle school crawls from the bottom of the screen, and off across the sky.

No words, fast clips of ships clashing in the night, battle school maneuvers, nature scenes on earth, and a vast fleet of bugger ships crawling across a blank sky. No sound at all, other than the music. Title card.

I love teasers that tell you essentially nothi about the story.
