Potentially cool- but I think the real goodness of Hitchhikers is in clever language, wordings, descriptions of thoughts, etc that would be nigh impossible to do in a movie.

If any could have ever have pulled this off, in my mind, it would have been the Pythons. Half the characters, to me, have the voice of John Cleese.

One of the Monty Python guys wrote a book based on an idea that came up in one of the Hitchhiker books. It's called Starship Titanic and it's really pretty good. Amazon reviewers only gave it an average of 3 stars out of 5 but I liked it.
Just looked it up, it was Terry Jones.

Anyone read a book called Good Omens? It's by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It's very Hitchikerish. Incidentally, Terry Gilliam (Python, Brazil, 12 Monkeys) is making a movie out of it. It's a lighthearted romp about the Apocalypse and the Antichrist. I strongly reccommend.

Last I heard, the Good Omens movie was on hold
I'd be surprised if either a Hitchhiker's movie or a Good Omens movie can be as satisfying as the originals... the Hitchhiker's TV show was so-so (the first couple episodes were pretty good, but after that the show lost steam)... I still like the original Hitchhiker's radio shows the best, hope I'll be able to track down a copy sometime...
