Potentially cool- but I think the real goodness of Hitchhikers is in clever language, wordings, descriptions of thoughts, etc that would be nigh impossible to do in a movie.

Agreed.

If any could have ever have pulled this off, in my mind, it would have been the Pythons. Half the characters, to me, have the voice of John Cleese.

If I remember right, Douglas Adams helped write shows for the last season of Monty Python, so that makes sense...

(OK, looked it up at imdb.com, yep, he did write an episode)

One of the Monty Python guys wrote a book based on an idea that came up in one of the Hitchhiker books. It's called Starship Titanic and it's really pretty good. Amazon reviewers only gave it an average of 3 stars out of 5 but I liked it.

Just looked it up, it was Terry Jones.

I keep hearing about a Red Dwarf movie too, but we still don't see it.

I think I'm about to Panic! [Angst]

Don't Panic!

IMDB is tossing out Johnny Depp and Jim Carrey for Zaphod (edited to fix)... I think those are both interesting choices...

A younger Cleese would have been a terrific Arthur... would like to see him as Slartibartfast now...

Someone also suggested David Hyde Pierce (Niles, from Frazier) as the voice of Marvin... I think that could be interesting as well...

Anyone read a book called Good Omens? It's by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It's very Hitchikerish. Incidentally, Terry Gilliam (Python, Brazil, 12 Monkeys) is making a movie out of it. It's a lighthearted romp about the Apocalypse and the Antichrist. I strongly reccommend.

... and Neil Gaiman wrote a book about Douglas Adams/HGttG, so that's appropriate... [Smile]

Last I heard, the Good Omens movie was on hold

I'd be surprised if either a Hitchhiker's movie or a Good Omens movie can be as satisfying as the originals... the Hitchhiker's TV show was so-so (the first couple episodes were pretty good, but after that the show lost steam)... I still like the original Hitchhiker's radio shows the best, hope I'll be able to track down a copy sometime...

Sorry... I meant to say Johnny Depp and Jim Carey for Zaphod not Ford.

plaid, I think you can get the radio show from audible.com (http://audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp). Just download it and burn your own CD.

Benson's World (http://www.bensons-world.co.uk/) has Region 2 DVD's of the BBC series. If you have a region 2 or region free DVD player, then you can order the series from them. [Big Grin]
