I decided to finally do something about the 10 kilos I've put on in the last couple of years. Something other than whinging about it, that is.
Pure self-motivation just isn't going to work for me, but I don't really want to go to meetings either - so I thought I'd join weightwatchers online. Lots of exciting online tools to play around with, guides and help etc.
BUT I CAN'T!
It's only available to residents of the US, UK, Canada and Germany.
I thought about just making up a US address (or using Tony's sister's address) - I figured they wouldn't really care, provided my credit card worked.
But then the lawyer side of me got all squicked out at the disclaimer page - "I agree that I am resident of the US" - I just couldn't do it.

Ok, now THAT's just rude!
There are some other good online sites, though, IIRC. I'll see what I can dig up. What tools in particular did you like?

Thanks Valentine - we have Weight Watchers here, but just not the online component.
If I want to do it without going to the meetings I have to buy a really (really) expensive 'at home' pack, which has lots of stuff I don't want (like 7 day menu plans) and none of the online stuff that I find attractive (searchable recipes, points calculators, little graphs - I'm a sucker for little graphs).
So the books aren't the problem - just the elusive online access.
But thanks for the offer!

I don't want menu plans, I like to cook and choose what I'll eat. But I'd like a way of measuring what I do cook.
I quite like the idea of something to keep track of things for me. The WW one includes keeping track of points you've eaten and points you've exercised - which I kind of like. More exercise = a glass of wine with dinner. Sounds good to me!
Finally, as I said - little graphs. Charts. Cool stuff that I'm sure I could do without but I just like it. I think it's related to my stationary fetish.
Edit: Cool, Valentine! I think that's about my aim... *thinks* - no, 10 kg is closer to 22 pounds. Of course, I'd be happy to lose less and gain some muscle instead. I think I'd like to have muscles.

No problem. I couldn't find any Points calculators. Several sites which apparently used to have 'em were forced by WW to take 'em down. Gotta protect the ol' copyright.

Looking through these sites - one says that to lose a pound / week you have a decrease your calorie intake by (or increase your exercise to ) 3500 calories a week.
That's a lot!!
Thing is, I know what I have to do to get healthier - drink more water, exercise more. I eat pretty heathily as it is.
I know I should be able to do this on my own without needing graphs and calculators. Maybe I'll give it a try.
Edit: All fixed. I also realised I was confusing weeks with days. Now 3,500 cal a day - that *is* a lot.
Well, YEAH! Very few people should be consuming that many in a day (and contrary to some claims, there is no way to consume negative calories ).

Rules for this diet:
1. If you eat something and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories. 2. If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled out by the diet soda. 3. When you eat with someone else, calories don't count if you don't eat more than they do. 4. Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot chocolate, brandy, toast, and Sara Lee Cheesecake 5. If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner. 6. Movie related foods do not have additional calories because they are part of the entire entertainment package and not part of one's personal fuel. (Example: Milk Duds, Buttered Popcorn, Junior Mints, Red Hots, or Tootsie Rolls). 7. Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking causes calorie leakage. 8. Things licked off knives or spoons have no calories if you are in the process of preparing something. Examples: peanut butter on a knife while making sandwiches or ice cream on a spoon while making a sundae. 9. Foods that have the same color have the same number of calories. Examples are spinach and pistachio ice cream or mushrooms and white chocolate.
NOTE: Chocolate is a universal color and may be substitited for any other food color. Now this is my sort of diet

The amount of energy required to heat ice water to room temperature is very small -- and the waste heat that you produce anyway via normal metabolic processes should be more than sufficient. But it's a common notion -- I hear it from my bio students every year.
