Stupid users that open stupid attachments to e-mails without thinking and cause new viruses to sweep through our corporation and ruin my day.....

[Grumble]

Farmgirl venting
(p.s. - it's Bagle.ai ! McAfee hasn't even put out a fix for it yet....)

Heh - I've been trouble-shooting my aunt and uncle's machine for the last week running.

Current score? 222 worms, 4 trojans and a virus I haven't been able to track down yet.

And did I mention they're on dial-up?

Oh believe me, Justa, we run tons of security on our exchange server and update daily if not more frequently than that. We had just run updates last night.

But this variant hit us first (McAfee hadn't even seen it yet) and so we scramble to minimize damage. And apparently came in because someone in the bank open a web-email account of some sort, and the attachment, from her web e-mail. (we have most of those sites blocked, like hotmail, etc.)

We have the greatest prevention the nation offers -- but it is kind of like condoms -- sometimes things get through due to stupidity of users not following rules...

You're right, Tom! The last 2 or 3 times that anything hit us, we were one of the first to report it to McAfee. I suppose being a financial institution??? Heck, I have no idea!!! Maybe our users are just more stupid... (we DO have policies about opening attachments, etc.)

We have one staffer that pretty much eats/sleeps/breathes his job as server security administrator -- is often here in the middle of the night applying the latest/greatest patches and updates -- so you would think we are the most protected company in the region...

Just be glad your IT department doesn't tell all faculty/staff to use EUDORA. With my pushing we officially tell people to use FireFox, but when the head admin thinks Eudora is "t3H 5h17" heh....every single virus that hits our network gets spread by his computer first...you'd think he'd learn.

Eewwwwww... Eudora is nasty....

I wish we could get all employees to use Firefox -- most of us here in IT are using Firefox exclusively on our PCs when using an internet browser. But the "powers that be" won't let us recommend it for bank-wide use. They aren't comfortable with change...

What I ended up doing was bombarding the administration with articles on the insecurities of IE over the course of two weeks, writing an article for the IT site here. Sending it to all staff, along with a followup email "due to popular demand" giving tips and hints including smart bookmarks and mouse gestures, telling them how to use tabs, etc. What I suggested to another friend that does the IT for his dad's firm is sneak into all the computers, install Firefox and change to the "Luna" theme, and change the desktop icon, I've actually done that for some other people...hehehe their parents never noticed [Razz] .

(note that I don't take credit for this idea, I have to thank Fugu for help here)

Interesting - I have to come to Hatrack to find out why I've only gotten one short little e-mail from my husband all day.

You have time to tell Hatrack what you're doing all day, but not me? Hmph. [Grumble]

Switching to mozilla (now firefox) was the best thing I ever did to imporove my browsing experience.

The only drawback is that I have ads filtered out, so I don't see the entertaining google adds on hatrack.
