Oh, is it the John Kerry interview? I wish I had cable so I could watch that. Let me know how it is, would you?

John Kerry: "We do have nice profiles."
Jon Stewart: "I'm all Jew. You may be a quarter, I got everything."

--

JS: "Are you the #1 most liberal senator in the nation?"
JK: "Uhh...No."

--

JS: "Are you, or have you ever, flip-flopped?"
JK: "I've flip-flop-flop-flipped."

JK: "I think transforming Fast Food into fuel...would be efficient."

JK: "We're open to the public. We want to talk to America."
JS: "I've talked to some of America...nah. You don't wanna talk to them."

JK: "The most interesting people want to introduce themselves to you in the mens room."

JS: "Is it true that everytime I use ketchup, your wife gets a nickel?"
JK: "Would that it were, sir. Would that it were."

I loved the hard-hitting and insightful interviewing. He really wasn't afraid to ask the tough questions.

JS: Why are you so brilliant?
JK: Because Bush is a dummy.
AUDIENCE: Yaaay!!!

JS: How do you feel about George Bush being the devil.
JK: I don't like George Bush.
AUDIENCE: Yaaay!!!

JS: You remember when George Bush made a bunch of terrible decisions that turned our country into the worst place to live in the world? What would you have done?
JK: I'd have made better decisions than that dummy.
AUDIENCE: Yaaay!!!

JS: Can you leave your pants down for another minute, my nose is still in there.
JK: Oh, sorry...
AUDIENCE: Yaaay!!!

I like Jon Stewart. I think he's very smart and funny. But he makes Bill O'Reilly look like King Solomon. Even Bill Maher wouldn't have been so lavish in his approbation during this interview. I was a little disappointed.

I did, however, like the little girl oil executive. That Steven Colbert is one funny SOB. "I'm not your daddy. I'm a reporter.

Ha. I love when Stewart pointed out that that was what secret service was for.

Speed 2,
I think Stewart would be equally polite and hiney-kissing to George W. if he appeared on the show. He does make fun of Kerry an awful lot, and it is fake news, after all.

It is a good point, though. How much responsibility does a fake news show have to the public to be unbiased? None, really, yet the show is watched by an increasing number of people as their main news source. (I read this somewhere and have no link, sorry)

I disagree. I think Stewart tends to fawn more over more powerful people, as it appears he is still amazed that anyone in power takes the show seriously enough to show up.

His interview with John McCain was equally (and hilariously) toadying, and they actually used Bob Dole as a guest political commentator in the 2000 election.

If there is a bias - and certainly there is, they're human - it's that they tend to favor articulate people, the ones they can have fun with without overpowering.

Chris, I agree, but was not sure why I disagreed with everyone's disagreement until you said that. I think Stewart would be extremely respectful of GWB, and I think it would be fun. (and I think you are right in that it would be because he is a big wig)

On my way home from school today, I was thinking about a recent interview he had with an ex-football player who gave it all up. (sorry, I forget his name)

I thought he(JS) was the rudest I have ever seen him, and I was angry, because I wanted to hear what this man had to say. It made me feel very sad for him.

In no way does Jon Stewart claim to be unbiased, and it IS his show, and it IS a satire/parody("What the heck is the difference, anyway?," asked the English major), but I did feel that his treatment of this fellow was abysmal.

Liz

PS My favorite show if his, ever, was when they did the spoof of the Church of Universal of Love and Music. I still laugh, thinking about it, especially because Donna the Buffalo just played there.

he prefaced the interview with something along the lines of "we are not a news program, we are a comedy show." it's not his responsibility to bring to surface issues, its his responsibility to bring laughs to the audience.

It is a comedy show.

It is also one of the most influential political commentary shows on today, whether they admit it or not.

I'm sure they'd admit that a lot of people take them seriously.

It's whether people are *supposed* to take them seriously that they've said "no" to.

The ex-football player stood up to Stewart well, though. He kept mocking Stewart for not actually having read the book.

I love the Daily Show. Yes, it's biased, but it's so damned funny, and everytime I watch it, I can't help but think they're telling more truth than anybody else.

Like Stewart said on the John Kerry Show, I don't know if that's a poor reflection on the state of the news media, or a poor relfection on the state of comedy on the Daily Show.

Foust, do you remember his name?

I thought it was sad that Jon S. was so blatant about not reading his book. I think there might be more to the story, as well. Anyway, it was a side of him I did not care for.

And let's face it, he(Jon Stewart, not football guy) speaks my language, politically, so I think he is quite clever. I can certainly see how someone with another viewpoint would feel annoyed.

Wait a sec. What language does he speak?
I haven't read the guy's book, either, but his whole point seems to be that we put entertainers and athletes up on too high of a pedestal -- and Stewart's whole response was, basically, "Duh. Nothing new there: goes back to ancient Greece, really."

So if you HAVE read the book, can you tell me what this guy had to say that's novel? (Note: despite the question, he seemed like an interesting and intelligent guy, a fairly sharp wit, and someone principled enough to walk away at the top of his game. I'm not critical of him; I genuinely don't know why what he has to say could POSSIBLY be in opposition to anyone's political agenda.)

Tom,

Sorry, I was talking about Jon Stewart speaking my language, not the football guy whose name I do not know.

Are you saying that Jon Stewart should have given him the brush-off, just because what he has to say isn't "novel?" (That is how I am reading what you write) In that case, couldn't he have screened him as a guest as someone he was not interested in interviewing, instead of belittling him?

Hm. I have to admit that I didn't find Stewart quite as rude during that interview as you did. Christy found it harsh, too, but I -- perhaps hardened by years of being a guy -- found it pretty typical alpha-male joking. I mean, the guy gave as good as he got, IMO, and was hardly a passive observer in the process.

Good point about the alpha maleplay, Tom. I wonder if he got harsh because he felt like his credibility was being questioned. There was definitely a nasty edge to it, but that just might be my softness after many years of being a gal. ha ha.

It just didn't feel fun to me.

The show today was interesting. They had the chairman of the Republican campaign, and Stewart pretty much admitted they make more fun of Republicans than Democrats. His explanation being, the Republicans are the ones in power.

Stewart also said he'd be a "total pussy" if Bush were to come on the show.

Not reading your guests' books is no big deal. You think Letterman and Leno read all the crappy books of people they have to interview? At least Stewart openly admits his ignorance instead of reading his intern's notes. [Wink]

Beren,
It was not really the fact that he hadn't read the book that bothered me. I realize they don;t read them all. (and he actually makes fun of himself when he DOES read the books)

In fact, I was not as bothered as it seems I was. it is just that isaw a little nasty edge there, and wanted to hear more of what the guy had to say. I kind of wosh we could drop it now.

By the way, last nights show was a repeat, but might be my favorite Stephen Colbert segment ever(don't worry, I will say that again) He does a spoof on diversity at the Democratic convention. A classic.

Does anyone know if there is a place to find the transcripts of the shows? I have looked everywhere.

Liz

PS Thanks M and S for the name.

It is a bit sexist to call somebody a female genital to say they're weak, but just as much so as calling somebody a "dick" to mean they're bigoted and/or ornery.

Anyway, Foust, I do think the more vulgar meaning is what's usually meant when used as an insult. But Stewart used it in a self-deprecatingish way, so it's all good. [Cool]

"It's not man-hating to call somebody a male genital -- why would it be woman-hating to call them a femal genital?"

I am sorry, nut this is one of the funniest sentences ever. I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to one genital. ha ha. (Oh my goodnes, what is WRONG with me? I keep making these typos. I am leaving this one in, just because it works with the genital theme)

As for the term "pussy," I think there is the pussy-cat kind of sweet-acting connotation, then there is the genitalia connotation, then there is the "You are such a pussy!" meaning "You are such a jerk." (I have heard the term used that way.

So, my original question was if Jon Stewart thought he would act sweet and polite, or if he would get all tough and jerky.
