Because I was so curious about them and can't really frame it into a proper question.
What are they exactly?

State Standards for education are basically meant as a guide for teachers, parents, and students. They guide instruction. They explain what should be covered at each grade level. Supposedly, the state tests for them. And your job as a teacher is to teach to the standards.

Interesting, but could you occassionally go outside of the structure if you need to?
