Anyone have an opinion on this? (Wow, Boris has had two opinion threads in one day. New record. He must be bored out of his mind at his parents' hourse)

I've always thought it's worth less than people think...More often than not, I've felt that most of the people in on protests were there more for the social aspect of it than for actually taking a stand. (As a side note, I even hate protests that are organized for positions I agree with. Pro-life protests are some of the worst I've ever seen.)

I think perhaps people have forgotten the purpose of a demonstration. It is supposed to show that the group / cause / movement in question is capable of getting together a thousand people in an organised fashion. "Now think what would happen if we were angry. Better listen to us." In short, it's a show of strength. But people don't back it up; they go to the protest and think they've done something. So politicians pretty much ignore the protests.

Protesting, as in every person smoking weed on the governors front lawn, could work.

Protesting, as in lets stand and scream annoying chants outside of a sound proof building, is worthless.

Protesting only works in matters of civil disobedience, if your not willing to go to jail, you must not care all that much. I mean I disapprove of violent protests, but who really cares that the tree huggers are standing behind the barricades chanting. The TRee huggers are only making a noise that a good radio inside can drowned out. If the tree huggers were really trying to change things, they'd either join ELF or chain their selves to a tree. Now going to jail, that gets publicity, and the more people who know about the cause, the more people who join it.

edit: i can't spell
