I have noticed more Dobies popping up since the election and post-election backlash got over with. Since I joined up during the middle of all that mess, I was just curious if dobies are a way of life on Hatrack, or if it's a recent thing.

They've been around as long as I can remember which, admittedly, isn't that long compared to some.

I was just wondering if the frequency has increased lately, or if there was a lapse in them. I don't remember any popping up during my first month here.

Well, I've been here about half a year, and I've seen them since day one. But I've also noticed they seem to be more common now. That may be an illusion, though. I don't actually know.

Usually seeing one spawns the appropriate thought-processes in other people for additional Dobie ideas. Just one of those cycle things. Someone had the idea of keeping them all to one thread way back when, but that never caught on....

Boris, do you know the "History of Dobies" on Hatrack?

And yeah, they ebb and flow like the tide - in terms of frequency... But have been around for a very long time now.

Dobies are threads with titles close to another "serious" thread, just made to make people read it by mistake. Usually it is completed by a link to a site or a picture related to he title in a funny way.

*remembers fondly the day of a hundred dobies*

It wasn't really a hundred, but it sounds cooler that way.

What I think is odd is that almost everyone finds other people's Dobies more annoying than not, and yet feel compelled to make them themselves. I don't *think* I've ever succumbed to the urge, but I could be wrong. I know I've occasionally posted my dobie in the thread that inspired me, in lieu of bothering everyone with yet another Dobie thread.

Oh, yes. Dobie. His Dad had a grocery store, as I recall. Hung out with some beatnik named Maynard G. Krebs and a girl called Zelda. Maynard changed his name later on, got himself a job as a first mate and ended up lost at sea, and Zelda is now serving in the California legislature. Didn't know what happend to Dobie until I came here; I'd always thought he probably took over the family business. [Razz]
