The Tsunami that killed all those people in Asia also killed tons of marine wildlife, leaving many of them endangered, or those that were endagered now extinct. I know we have to look at the welfare of humans first, but I still wish we paid more attention to the welfare of wildlife.

Dan, I had no idea that box turtles could right themselves! I'd always just assumed that being flipped upsidedown was a death sentence for all turtles. How do they do it? Do they rock, and eventually tip back, or do they somehow use their tail as a lever, or what?

This is Jamie's friend Sarah. If you must know the background story I guess I can tell you. When Jamie goes to bed at night she pulls all the blankets up around her like a turtle. When we were in Buffalo she even tore off the fitted sheet she was pulling the sheets so close up to her. So we were sitting in the hotel room tonight discussing how Jamie "turtles" when she sleeps when the thought hit me about whether or not turtles could roll over once they were on there backs. The next thought was I wonder how long it takes for them to do it if they can. Followed by, I am not nearly mean and cruel enough to try and find out as I can only imagine the turtle may feel a bit like a helpless lobster screaming as he is tossed into a pot of boiling water (I am also Jewish and therefore would not eat the lobster, or turtle for that matter, anyway.) So Nate, Rivka, and Jamie all came up with the idea to ask hatrack people and see what we got back. I have to say I am very impressed with the response. I just hope no one has harmed any animals in the answering of this question.

Turtles will suffocate if they can't right themselves because the lungs are at the top of the shell. At least, I seem to remember something to that effect during my turtle days.
Actually, one of the first things I thought concerning the tsunami was for the coelacanths. Just because that's what I associate with the Indian ocean.

My russian tort likes to climb to the top of his cage and hang out. Eventually he falls and lands on his back, but he's able to right himself without too much trouble.
