SCI FI Renews Galactica
quote:
SCI FI Channel has ordered a second season of its hit series Battlestar Galactica, which has aired five episodes of its first season of 13 episodes. Details of the renewal—including which cast members will return, how many episodes will be produced and when the second season will commence—were still being worked out at press time.

Battlestar Galactica has been a ratings winner for SCI FI since its Jan. 14 premiere. The latest episode, Feb. 4's "You Can't Go Home Again," scored the show's best ratings yet, with 3.2 million viewers.

For the show's second season, creator and executive producer Ronald D. Moore previously told SCI FI Wire that he has already been working on as many as six new scripts to resolve the multiple cliffhangers that will end season one. Moore added that he wants to delve deeper into the show's religious themes and open up the Cylon world a bit more in the coming season. Moore continues to post his thoughts on a personal blog on SCIFI.COM. Battlestar Galactica airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, part of the channel's SCI FI Fridays lineup.

Maybe just maybe they've learned thier lesson? ... maybe?

I saw that on AICN yesterday. I'm stoked =)

I understand the whole of the season has already shown in britan and it was well received. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season here as well as a 2nd season.

Hopefully they'll do a full 22 episode season instead of a half season. (assuming they can keep the quality up.)

Um, I'm curious.

Fahim and I watched the mini-series. We hated it. Beyond hated. Fahim made me promise that we'd never speak of it ever again, he hated it that much. It was slow, it was stupid, and it was boring.

Is the television series that much better? Or are we going to get hung and quartered for posting a dissenting view? [Dont Know]

Yes. Anyone with a dissenting view will be hung, drawn and quartered. Without trial. In secret. In the dark. Underground. By the mafia.

Whaddaya mean, this is a democracy [Wink] ?

This doesn't show they've learned much. Farscape was on for four seasons before they trashed it.

Quid, if you hated the mini you will hate the series. The series starts pretty much at the moment the pilot ends. It is taught, brilliant, tense and clever. Or boring, if that kind of stuff bores you. [Big Grin] I am sure there are other cool shows on somewhere at 10:00 on Friday!

Except we found it slow, plodding, predictable, boring, stupid, and senseless. For an hour or so, pretty much nothing happened. Characters were introduced, but . . . That was it.

These people are so advanced that they've settled other worlds, but they still use glasses to correct vision, and they still have glass in their spaceships, which shatters upon impact. They use rolly office chairs that can seriously maim someone when the ship is under attack.

They use telephones that are corded to communicate with each other. They have paper books and paper logs. Their only innovation seems to be paper that's cut at the corners. How is that improvement over the old style of rectangular paper? Does the fact that the paper's cut at the corners somehow make it more efficient? Why not go with round or triangular paper? Are they biased against round or triangular paper?

Are bisexual bathrooms another innovation? Or is that unisexual? Whatever. Both sexes using the same bathroom. Thing is, Ally MacBeal did it first, and that's several years ago.

How about their uniforms? Ugly unflattering stupidly designed tank tops going over equally ugly stupidly designed tshirts. I think they must have been going for as original as they could get, not realizing that the reason it was so original was because no one would be caught dead wearing it - willingly.

They use clear boards with markers to record information much the same way a submarine or air craft carrier has. For probably a few decades. They have maps that they roll out and lay on the flat surface the same way air craft carriers would.

This is a group of humans advanced enough to travel in space, to shift from one location to another, to colonize other worlds, and they roll out maps?

And let's talk about those Cylons. You know how the cylon robots - not the improved human looking models, but the old metal and electronics looking version - they have this red light that goes from left to right to left to right to left to . . . Well, you get it. Why would they have their space ships doing the same damn thing? Swing a red light from right to left to right to left to right to . . . All it does is say that the special effects people had no imagination and could only find clumsy ways to distinguish Cylon vessels from human vessels. No subtlety at all. None. Not a single bit.

Here's the thing. I love sci-fi. Love it. I go out of my way to watch sci-fi or read sci-fi. It is my drug of choice. I also love sci-fi shot in Vancouver, BC. I used to live there, and it was fun seeing stuff shot in my neighborhood or other neighborhoods I frequented. It was fun to recognize places in the shows. Special effects done in Vancouver tend to be done very well - a whole lot of sci-fi stuff is shot there, so they've had to get really good.

So what happened? I love taught, tense, brilliant, and clever, and I found none of that - not a single bit of it - in the mini-series. Neither did Fahim-baby. Were my expectations just set too high based on it being filmed in my old city?

Are you saying that Fahim and I are the only freaks who hated it? Or is it that you're in an alternate universe where you get better quality sci-fi than we do?

Or did the series improve over the mini-series?

Look, if you enjoyed the mini-series and think it's great, then great. I'm really not slamming you. I just . . . don't get it.

Edit for clarity: I'm talking of the mini-series. We have not watched the tv series, so I have no opinion of that as yet.

Umm... The battlestars with computers all got gunched because the cyclons hacked them.

The Galatica has no computers so it was the only one that got away. It was old and set to retire.

Therefore, paper maps, corded phones, etc.

Yes - Galactica was the oldest Battlestar, deliberately not networked so that any insidious virus that the Cylons created wouldn't be passed. That's why it and the older vipers were the only fighting ships that didn't just disconnect during the attack. The red light is an homage to the original show. It certainly would seem odd to new folks, but fans of the original get it. Seemed to me also, that the red light shining is what triggered their disabling program on the newer ships.

It's okay if you don't like it - certainly isn't for everyone. I will say that since the pilot they've had a lot of action. [Dont Know]

Did I say freaks? Sorry if it was even remotely implied, as it wasn't. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. You aren't the only ones, of course. There are plenty of folks who hated it...most of them folks who couldn't let go of the original but your reasons are just as valid. Thankfully enough people in the US and England watched and enjoyed these shows a lot...to the point where they are going to do more. To each their own.

And don't watch the series, either. As I said, if you don't like the pilot and based on your verbal tirade about it, you will probably blow a head gasket with the series. Lots of paper maps, books with no corners, water in glasses, flashlights, forks, other boring stuff and cylons with red eyes that go back and forth. I am not being snarky, just saying if hated one you will definitely hate the other because they found a vision and a style and they are sticking with it.

I dunno, I'm actually glad to see it done in that style, complete with wired telephones, shattering glass, and flat maps. Especially the flat maps. Cause if they tried to use some fancy CG, it would just look fake. And that's not even the point. It doesn't matter how "advanced" their technology is. Technology is just a way to set the scene, to pose the difficult questions. The story is really all about the power struggles, and the relationships, and what it means to be human.

But then, if the show doesn't do it for you, I can certainly understand that. There are cliches all over it. It is somewhat predictable. And I'll back you right up on the red light going back and forth. Cheesy, cheesy, cheesy.

I liked it, though. It'll be interesting to see where they go in the second season.

Yay! 20 episode season this summer!

This link contains mention of who is in next season so don't click it if you're scared of spoilage. It's kinda hard to get worked up over a character in a tense moment when "Oh, I know s/he lives. s/he's in next season!"
