I was just listening to the self-titled Blink 182 CD. I've never been a huge fan of them, and this CD didn't change my mind whatsoever until they got to the last song. I've also never been a huge fan of The Cure, but somehow Robert Smith's vocals just worked with the Blink song.
And, while I'm a big fan of Queen and an average fan of David Bowie, the version of "Under Pressure" they did together has always been my favorite song by either artist.
I also don't care what you have to say about any of the three as a person; Eminem's collaborations with Dido and Elton John were undoubtedly two of the coolest things ever.
Jack Johnson & Handsome Boy Modeling School's "Breakdown" was also pretty cool.

I don't particularly care for either artist (though Gwen is growing on me) but I really like that song.

I really enjoyed the special when Dave and Trey Anastasio went to Africa and jammed with a band there. That was amazing.

I saw Santana play with the Grateful Dead, and it was one of the most amazing concerts I have ever seen.

Yes!!! Yes yes yes!!! I love that. And Paul Simon and Linda Ronstadt on "Under African Skies" on the same album.
Also, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, and Ricky Skaggs as "The Three Pickers"; I saw a blurb for it when it was slated for release, and was so excited, my husband got it at midnight the day it came out for me. He had known nothing about any of those artists, but let me tell you, he was hooked on that album like that. *snaps fingers*
And I mustn't forget to mention the albums Trio and Trio II (especially the latter), with Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt.
Oh! Oh! I can't believe I forgot Another Country, by the Chieftans. The whole album is collaborations, and they're all wonderful! (I seem to be in a somewhat ebullient mood today.)

I'd argue that Sting is only ever good in collaborations. He collaborated with Stewart Copeland in The Police, which is what made that band great. He collaborated with Branford Marsalis in his first few solo albums, which made those great. The best song off his next album was a collaboration with Eric Clapton and David Sanborn. And then there was Cheb Mami. But in general, ever since Branford left the group his quality has declined by orders of magnitude.
Of course, it was his collaboration with Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams that marked the exact moment that he sold out, so it's not a completely firm rule.
When Stan Getz collaborated with Joao Gilberto, they made one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. Of course, that's the great thing about jazz... at its best it's practically nothing but collaborations. Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Miles Davis and Gil Evans. Miles Davis and John McLachlan. Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter. Miles Davis and.... fill in the blank. Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Pat Metheny and Gary Burton. Pat Methneny and Charlie Haden. John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. I'll stop now.
Bobby McFerrin collaborated on an album with Yo-Yo Ma in the early '90s, and came out with his masterpiece.
I always thought Steely Dan sounded best when they had Larry Carlton playing guitar with them.
Talking Heads and U2 made their best albums in collaboration with Brian Eno.
One of my favorite Yes albums came about when they collaborated with The Buggles for Drama.
The genesis of the Grunge movement came when Neil Young collaborated with Nils Lofgren and Crazy Horse.
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg collaborated to become among the most powerful figures in Hip-Hop.
That's all I can think of right now.

How'd I know that something I listed would get mentioned and not in a good light? Oh well. I've resigned myself to the fact that most of the music I enjoy will be disliked by most people here for one reason or another.

Nils Lofgren is one of the most underappreciated solo musicians ever. He is unbeliveable. He is one of those people who makes everyone else sound so good, they think it is the other person doing all the work. We saw him in Northampton many moons ago, and it remains one of my favorite shows ever.
