Pardon my ignorance on these things, but would a "signed proof" be worth a lot in comparison to, say, a signed first edition?
What exactly is a proof version of a book? It sounds like this person has this because he worked in a bookstore, but the description he gives says this is some sort of marked-up copy from Card himself...i.e., not just a signed 1st edition.
How many of these are there likely to be?

The proofs are what go out to the editors and reviewers. Hence how they get quotes from them before the release date. They aren’t worth much other then a novelty item. There are some out there, but the 1st editions are what is coveted. They are the corrected final version.

I've got an unsigned proof of David Brin's The Postman (just happened to be the copy I picked up at a library book sale a decade or so ago). It's worth a grand total of $7, I think.

The Barnes and Noble near me sells proofs for a dollar apeice or something. Granted, they're mostly crappy books, but still.

I'll admit to having paid more than that for a copy of the Hart's Hope uncorrected proofs with a sample of the original cover. Totally worth it to me, though, because it's my favorite of all his books with no close second. SotH proofs . . . I might take if someone were about to throw away, but spend actual money on? No way, I need to save up for my next totally frivolous item.
