Awwww! You know, I didn't want an engagement ring. We had a little argument over it; I finally gave in when I realized that my family and friends weren't going to recognize the engagement without a ring. So I told him to get me silver, and by no means more than $100.
Will wonders never cease, he listened to me!

Are you still working at Starbucks? Is your fiancee a worker there?
Email me or something sometime if you get a chance.
ketchupqueen, I plan on using a rubber band for an engagement ring, but going all out for my wedding ring. If, you know, I ever get married.

You could always go with a string, or twine.
The first recorded engagement ring wasn't given until 1477, and came as a direct result of Pope Innocent III's declaration that there should be a waiting period between betrothal and the wedding.
The first wedding rings were in Africa. Egypt along the Nile, actually.
quote: Sedges, rushes and reeds, growing alongside the well-known papyrus were twisted and braided into rings for fingers
Might be kind of unique and if you make it out of leather or something, it could really last quite a while. I like the idea of tying a string on the finger, personally.
Did you also know that it only became US custom for men to wear wedding bands during WWII to remind them of their wives at home?

I did the big engagement ring thing. Didn't work out so well. I figure, next time (I hope there IS a next time -- and just one) I want no engagement ring. Instead, for our ten-year anniversary, I want an eternity band.

Wow, I never had any idea this was noticed...
I haven't been around in a while. Well, she is very nice and cute. I'm still working for Starbucks, and I'm going to school to be a auto technician, and hopefully a service manager at a car dealership.
I missed Hatrack, but I just spent way too much time in front of the computer.
EDIT: Just to catch you guys up. I've stopped being to lazy, lost 50 lbs, got a new car... yeah, I've changed me life a little bit.

I'm not sure but I thought it was Roman Donatios (I think that's the word) that started the practice. The bride was presented with an iron ring...

Damn, forget one word and the whole thing falls apart.
Let me say it correctly this time.
The first recorded diamond engagement ring, was given by the King of Germany, Maximilian I, to Mary of Burgundy in 1477.
