So*, we have these old atlases (that my Dad apparently got with a subscription to Time way back when), and I happened to note a particuarly interesting feature. On the last few pages, there was a long timeline showing how various nations merged into empires, grew, spilt, et cetera. Thicker lines denote relative power, striped lines indicate colonization/outside influence, and a line merges with another line when a group "loses its national identity." It has to paint with a broad stroke, since it covers such long periods of time, but it's really cool.
Here's a scan [really large JPEG] of two pages from it, covering 0 to 1200 AD.
Anyway, I was wondering a couple of things.
First: Is there anywhere I can find a full version of this thing online? I'm missing the last page...
And second: does anyone know of any software that could create a chart like this? MSWord just doesn't cut it. :/

If you want to print it really huge, I would re-draw it in Adobe Illustrator. It'll be compatible with most large-format printers and since it's vector-based, it'll make your file considerably smaller.

Also, there is a giant framed chart like that hanging in the Institute of Religion in Bozeman. It's pretty much the entire history of the world, and is probably something like 7 feet long. I think it's a National Geographic thing and is from the mid-20th century, because that's as far as the timelines go and there's no fall of the Soviet Union on it.

Kat: the best definition I can come up with as "cultural element," now adapted to mean a cultural element specifically in an online community. Hatrack has its own "culture" of sorts; dobies and "so*" are some memes here.

We had one of those in our downstairs family room when I was teenager! It was a little different but the same idea. I loved it! It was like eight feet long and two feet high or something.
I don't remember who made it, but I remember one striking detail was that it included Book of Mormon info on the "South/Central America" part. <grin> So I'm guessing it was either a Mormon or someone who knew LDS theology and needed to fill more space in that area of the chart.
I wish I still had it for when I get a house of my own.

Interesting Dante... that sounds like it could be the one that's up in the Institute, though I don't remember the Book of Mormon stuff being one there. But it very well could have been.
A quick Google search shows a product called the "Amazing World History Timeline Chart" by Granite Publishing that appears to be LDS in nature, but there aren't any pictures or descriptions anywhere.

So*, came into existence because Trisha (AKA pooka, AKA trisha the severe hottie AKA mothertree) started a thread where she said people often start their posts with "So," if they completely disagree with what was just said.
So we all started doing it just to be... well, obnoxious or funny. Take your pick.

Interesting. I didn't know so many Jatraqueros wanted one. If I ever find a really big one, I'll hang it in my room. Maybe Nat'l Geographic will send one someday...
I'm seriously thinking of buying one for when I have a house. Or even for my next apartment, which will be bigger than my current one.
