Great acting, some well-written characters, but it just seemed too idioticly wankerish sometimes for me to get into it.

*spoilers*

Like, Adam Sandler's character, Barry, is filled with rage because he wants to get away from it all, but can't. But the movie makes it pretty clear that it's the kind of rage where he's going to stab someone in the eye with an icepick. The movie, in fact, makes him appear to have absolutely zero in the way of redeeming or charming qualities.

But Emily Watson's character, Emma, falls in love with him just from looking at a picture of him and absolutely none of Barry's quirks have any noticable effect on her except for when he leaves her in the hospital which, after a few minutes of Barry verbally stumbling around, she just brushes off and continues merrily along being in love with him.

WHY, for the love of all that is holy does she do this? Why is she so in love with him? The movie never makes this clear. I mean, why, when at last they are in bed together and he says he wants to eat her face off as some kind of romantic repartee, does she not kick him out? Seems like the reasonable thing to do to me.

Anyways. I don't recommend it.

I was very confused by the movie as well. Maybe something in his physical features reminded her of a past relationship or brought on some memory that had her fall in love at first sight through the picture.

Also, she faked her first meeting with him, which was leaving the car for repairs when it really didn't need any. I guess the impression he gave off, the shy gentle guy that is willing to help, was a turn on for her?

Perhaps she was really lonely and just fell in love because he seemed like a nice harmless guy and maybe she hadn't had much luck finding guys like that. (He didn't act rage-filled and angry when she was around)

That's what I figure. Then again, I didn't really understand the movie, either. I watched it after sitting through 2 other very long DVD's, so by then I was very movied out.

Getting in deep love is quite easy; I don't see what you find so hard about it.

That aspect I didn't mind. What bothered me about the movie was all the product placement. It was a 2 hour long commercial for Healthy Choice.
but, I do adore Emily Watson. Perhaps they saw taht they had something in common.

Are you serious? The entire purpose of the Healthy Choice products was spent discussing how to rip them off. It had nothing to do with the corporation paying PTA off.

Haha, wow, I had almost forgotten about that part. Now I remember, it was the pudding and contest, right? Everyone always wondered why he would buy so much pudding.

"Healthy Choice"--get it? Get it?

I want to kick the director just for being so ham-handed with his symbolism.

I actually like the movie a lot. Then again, I'm also head over heels in love with his prior film, Magnolia. A film knee deep in symbolism.

i with Dave on this one. PT Anderson is one of the finest filmmakers currently working. I loved Punch Drunk Love but i know many people who did not enjoy it, and i don't blame them. it's a very uncomfortable movie to watch.

I own it on dvd. I enjoy it very much.

Sorry Jebus, but I can't troll on this topic. I liked the movie too much.

Both of the main characters were hard to match people, but they both were able to work towards being together. With her job she wasn't ever in the same place long enough to build many relationships. She liked her co-worker's brother's picture, and because he was willing to put forth effort to be around her (pudding) it made up for quite a bit of his nonsense.

Everyone I know that I've watched the movie with truely enjoyed it. I can't understand not liking it.

I loved this movie but can see why others do not.
