Tens of thousands of people are homeless in the aftermath of Katrina. The Red Cross and other relief organizations are scrambling to provide adequate shelter for all those who have lost their homes or been evacuated, but in the meantime, people have no sheltered place to sleep at night.

I know many of you care about helping the victims of Katrina. I also know many of you would like to contribute, but do not have the funds to do so. The Red Cross is explicitly discouraging itemized contributions in the form of food, blankets and necessities, but there is still a way you can make a difference!

Do you or someone you know live within 300 miles of New Orleans? Do you have a spare bed, an empty couch, or even an air mattress with floor room? MoveOn.org is sponsoring a Housing drive, and you can help by providing a victim of the hurricane with a temporary place to stay!

Please visit HurricaneHousing.org and sign up today.

I guess I should find out if there is similar needs for some of the people they are sending to Salt Lake. I read somewhere that 1,000 people will be sent here. If we can place them quickly, maybe they will send more.

GISCorps Alert
This is an urgent request. If you are qualified for any of these two
positions, email me as soon as you can (also attach your resume). In
response to hurricane Katrina’s disaster, GISCorps has been asked to
provide 20 volunteers to Mississippi Emergency Operation Center (EOC) in
Jackson, Mississippi. They need two groups of ten volunteers:
Group 1: Must have at least 5 years of experience and well versed in
using ArcGIS 9.0 in an SDE environment, comfortable in making maps and
conducting quick analysis. Experience in disaster management is a plus.
Group 2: Must have at least 5 years of experience and well versed in
using ArcGIS 9.0 and GPS software and equipment. **Must bring their own
laptop loaded with 9.0 and also must bring a GPS unit compatible with
ArcGIS**. This group will be working with search and rescue teams and
K-9 units mainly collecting data and navigating.
The following provides some general information provided by EOC office:
* Both groups must be able to fly out within 24 hours
* Must be able to stay for 5-7 days
* Will work in 12-hour shifts
* They provide lodging (in tents and on cots)
* They will provide meals
* Must bring boots, sleeping bags, and clothes suitable for field work
and be prepared for an extremely hot weather
* Must arrange and pay for your own flight, will be reimbursed for the
cost of the ticket later. Jackson airport should be open to commercial
flights. Memphis is a 4 hour drive away and a secondary option.
* Group two must bring own GPS and laptop (no exceptions). Group two
will be working in very harsh conditions and must be prepared to deal with
that.

Regards,

Shoreh Elhami, GISCorps Chair

mothertree, What I've heard is that the State of Utah is making plans to house refugees in Camp Williams so they are probably no looking for beds. They did how ever say that they will be asking churches to provide meals for the refugee. Stay tuned for your Relief Society to ask for people to cook.

I posted this in the other thread, but I'll post it here too. Detroit will probably have a few thousand refugees here in a short time. I know Ramdac, Telperion and Hamson live in the area with me, as does Lucy Pevensie, but she's on the other side of the county.

If you guys are like me and can't give a lot of money, maybe there'll be some volunteer work for us Metro Detroiters. Maybe the four of us can volunteer together.

Aw, we have such wee cute kids staying at our house. Why do they need to go elsewhere? We should just keep them permanently!

I just found this page.
http://www.fema.gov/press/2005/katrinamissing.shtm

It has links to various webpages, with survivors, missing, people looking for family etc.

I'm going to try to link up the some entries in the different databases by hand.
I'm sure Russell/fugu could wave a digital wand and do it better, but I'm going to try the old-fangled way: copy-n-paste.

edit:wow, it's emotionally exhausting. People are looking for entire families, who were at ground zero. In trailer parks. [Frown]
