Interview with Summer Glau (River). Spoilers for characterization and overall plot. This is the kind of spoiler that makes logically sense to those who have seen the show, but you may still not want to know about it before seeing the movie.

Also, Ryuko had asked if the movie would make sense to those who hadn't seen the series. One of the interviews mentions that Joss wrote it to pick up after the series, but also took the time to explain the characters adequately, so it should make sense both to fans of the series and newbies.
I heard that there was talk of doing an animated feature ala the Animatrix to bridge the series and the movie. Latest I heard is that that fell through, but that they are now thinking of a comic book. I would be so up with that, as Joss-written comics are A Very Good Thing. This is an entirel unconfirmed rumor, though, so take it with a grain of salt.

If we have a Firefly get together at some point, and there is a potluck, somebody has to bring Firefly Flan for dessert. I know, I know, not how it's pronounced, but still.
Man I can't wait for this movie.

Advance screenings have begun and reviews are coming out. Guess what?
It seems to be pretty good. Who knew?
There's a couple of reviews up at AintItCool.com here and here, from fans of the show and from people who have never seen it.
Edited to add, for people new to AintItCool.com: Avoid looking at any of the TalkBack comments on the bottom of the articles. It's sort of the anti-Hatrack; the most mean-spirited, childish, arrogant message board I've ever seen. I love AintItCool, I just never scroll past the big ad...
There are some reviews at www.fireflyfans.net as well but I can't get the pages to come up.

I have a question: can I find out on the internet which theaters will be showing Serenity? I have been trying to find this info, and it hasn't been forthcoming. But I've gotten the impression that this movie might not be well-known enough to be placed in all theaters.

Come on. You have to admit that the talkbacks are funny. It never ceases to amaze me how creative those people are with their vulgarity. It's really quite impressive.

Well, I was hoping to get some specific info from the local Carmike theater, actually went by last night. There are no posters up for it. I figure that isn't a good sign.
I just called the theater, and they say they won't know till the Monday before. Crap.

I can't find any listings here in Kansas City, either. It's described as a nation-wide release, as opposed to a limited release. I guess time will tell.

Theaters usually don't know what movies they're getting until right before. The decisions are made at the corporate offices. As far as the posters, they get tons of posters shipped out and pretty much decide what they want to put up themselves. At least, that's how it was when I worked at one.

ElJay, that does give me some hope. Truly, not that many people are aware of Serenity. It just isn't "mainstream" enough to be viewed as pulling in the cash.

But it was made for cheap, so it doesn't have to do that well to warrant a sequel. If it gets good word of mouth, it can definitely reach the 70 million dollar mark (which is the number they need to guarantee a sequel).

This is when I love living in the vacinity of a significant number of theatres!
*bounce*
EDIT: Here in Toronto I have seen an "advertisment truck" driving around advertising Serenity, so it's not entirely missing out on the big major film things.

I have seen trailers in the theater, I haven't seen posters, but I haven't really been looking and the last couple of movies I went to were art-house flicks.
Mommy is doing an excellent job on Enig's and my Jayne hats.

So Dana, I take it that that means that there's no chance of you and Bob finding a way to get here?

Umm . . . if Northwest decides that they'd like to give us free plane tickets leaving on Friday after 6pm and returning on Saturday before midnight we could be there for a wee bit of it.
So no, probably not.

Despite seeing most major movies this summer I have yet to see the Serenity trailer. But my local theater has the poster up, and when I asked about promotional stuff the lady behind the counter went into their office and handed me a one-sheet poster (!).

I've seen the Serenity trailer in theaters a few times already. I'm not sure how well it will do with the mainstream people, though. The people I was at the theater with said it didn't look like something they'd like, or it just looked too freaky or too weird. It was only about 5 or 6 people who said that, but they're pretty much the typical teenage movie-watchers. Some of my other friends who's tastes are closer to mine said it looked really good, though. I'm definitely seeing it the day it comes out, I just hope I'll get the dvds by then so I could see the rest of the episodes.

I think it will be a smash...not like LOTR or anything, but a big hit.
Particularily on opening day/weekend. The press from that might help it become even more popular as well.
