Yeap, that's right, the drought is over! French cinemas are starting to show movies in original versions again! I missed H2G2 and The Island because there were only dubbed versions... [Frown] So this weekend my mission is set: Collision and De L'Ombre a la Lumiere! Ugh, I mean, Crash and Cinderella Man! [Big Grin] I actually almost missed them since I forgot they were coming out and the translated titles... well, for Crash it's ok, but for the other one I was lucky to spot the actors! Phew...

Fun, fun, fun all the way! That's after I finish my darned internship tomorrow...

Have fun. I like Cinderella Man. I have yet to see Crash, though I am looking forward to it.

I've heared about Crash here on Hatrack, and I still wonder how I totally missed it before that... Anyway, I checked out the trailer and it looks interesting; and it got very good reviews. So I'm expecting the best. (perfect way to end up dissapointed, I know [Wink] )

I saw most of Crash a few days ago... it was certainly an interesting movie although very depressing.

Haven't seen Cinderella Man yet, it's not on my "must watch" list but I guess that if I had nothing else to watch one day and I saw it at the store I'd give it a rental.

Saw Crash. Wow. It kept getting better and better. I think I was *really* impressed by it only after I stepped out of the theater and started thinking about it a little more. I might go to see it again the week after the next, if it's still showing.

I'm not sure if I'd qualify Crash as depressing, though. There were certainly some depressing things in it, but the overall impression was that the characters discovered themselves through some at-the-limit situations. Most of them discovered something good. Not all, but most. It's the most "realistic" movie I've seen in a while, and I think it's a perfect example of life not being "fair" and of the importance of still going on with it. "Life doesn't consist in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well." Some of the characters managed to do that in the end, and it left me feeling good.

Going to see Cinderella Man in a couple of hours. [Smile]

I love Crash. I love Crash.

I don't know if its depressing but I did cry twice during the movie. It definently wins as the most thought-provoking movie of the year.

Haven't seen Cinderella Man. I love my home-girl Renee, but I can't stand Crowe. Its Oscar fodder so I don't feel bad missing it.

I just purchased Crash yesterday. I adore it. When I first saw it, I didn't find it to be a depressing movie and I appreciated how it didn't sugarcoat anything. Crash literally made me gasp at certain points because of its willingness to SAY things.

Ok, so I've seen Cinderella Man too. Given its premise I wasn't *that* enthusiastic about it, but I have to say I really liked it. Fights and all, it was excellent. And it's really more than just the fights. It's about Braddock's (Crowe) attitude towards life from his moments of glory to those of despair.

Anyway, an excellent movie weekend. I'm glad I got to see both movies. [Hat]

Boxer in critical condition

Same ol', same ol'. In the movie (Cinderella Man) they were saying Max Baer killed two people in the ring. Guess boxing "is a dangerous sport"... Who knew?! [Razz]

Hmm, this is what Wikipedia has to say on Max Baer: Max Baer. Apparently he wasn't the "blood-thirsty" guy that was depicted in the movie. He did kill someone, but that left scars in him; from Wikipedia:
quote:
according to his son, Max Baer, Jr., he cried and had nightmares over the incident for decades afterwards.
I guess they just needed someone in great contrast with Braddock in the movie, and this overdramatization is what they came up with. If he was anything like what they described in the Wiki page, he couldn't have acted the way he was depicted in the movie, IMO.

Keep in mind that that movie is also told from Braddok's view, who wouldn't have had a wikki on him. [Big Grin]

Kwea: [Razz]

Guess I'm not the only one:
quote:
There has been contention as to whether the on-screen depiction of Max Baer is accurate. Baer's demeanor, both within and outside the ring, was reportedly much less brutal than was portrayed. According to film critic Roger Ebert, Baer's relatives and boxing historians have criticized the film's depiction of him, arguing that he killed only one man in the ring, Frankie Campbell, not two, and was considered to be a gentleman by the man who defeated him for the title, Braddock. Others assert that Baer was kind, charismatic, loved and respected, pointing out the emotional pain that Max Baer endured the rest of his life following Campbell's death, and the fact that he gave purses from his bouts to Campbell's family.
(from Wikipedia's article on Braddock)

Just saw Crash last night. Fabulous film. We've been needing a film that talks so openly about the racial assumptions / prejudices that we make for ages. And this film does it really really well.

There were laugh out load moments and parts where I was frightened for the characters.

If there is more on Crash on Hatrack can someone please link me to it? Thanks.

Question on Thandie Newton who was humiliated by the cop with the ill father and then rescued by him. Did you get the feeling she had forgiven him for his earlier abuse after he rescued her or whether she would leave that situation feeling both hugely disgusted by him and hugely grateful to him?

I saw H2G2 on the plane back from Australia, and honestly, Corwin, you didn't miss much. I love Douglas Adams and I'm crazy of Alan Rickman who dubbed Marvin, but it simply wasn't a good movie, apart from the first three minutes.
